-Chapter 2-

We meet with all of the initiates in the hallway. "This is where we divide" Lauren says. "The Dauntless- born initiates are with me. I assume you don't need a tour of the place." They chuckle as Lauren takes them away into the shadows of The Pit. I stare at the 9 initiates remaining. The Transfers. The small, only Abnegation girl, Tris stands at the back of the group. My eyes moving back to her every few seconds. "Most of the time I work in the control room, but for the next few weeks, I am your instructor" I say with confidence. Finally, some new kids to boss around. "My name is Four." A tall, Candor girl standing with Tris grins. "Four? Like the number?" She asks with a grin. Did she actually just ask me that? "Yes, Is there a problem?" I say staring back at her. In my head I'm laughing. "No" She says whimpering. Works every time, that death stare of mine. I can see Tris crack a smile. "Good, we're about to go into The Pit, which you will someday learn to love. It-" Christina cuts me off, again. "The Pit? Clever name." She snickers. I stride up to her and lean in. These Candor- smart- mouths. "What's your name?" I finally ask after a few seconds. "Christina" She mumbles. "Well, Christina, if I wanted to put up with Candor- smart- mouths, I would've joined their faction" I hiss at her. That seemed to shut her up. "The first lesson you will learn from me is to keep your mouth shut. Got that?" She nods. As I lead the group I can hear her mumble something and Tris replies "I guess he doesn't like to be laughed at" Smart girl.

I push open the large glass doors to The Pit and the initiates look around at their surroundings. The Pit was always filled with aggressive Dauntless fighting and chatting. As we walk deeper in, the sunlight fades and I can feel the fear of the initiates. "If you follow me, I'll show you the chasm" As we walk to the right of the Pit the gushing water in the chasm crashes against the rocks. A huge wave strikes the side and the water sprays up at us. "The chasm reminds us that there is a fine line between bravery and idiocy!" I shout between the howl of the water. "A daredevil jump off this ledge will end your life. It's happened before and it will happen again. You've been warned." I remember that time during my initiation...

"WHAT ARE YOU DOING VINCE?" I hear the shouts around me. "DON'T DO IT!" Someone screams. The next thing I know Vince's body disappears into the rocks and the water turns tinted red.

I return to present time and usher the initiates across the Pit. We walk into the dining hall and suddenly a huge bang of roars and stomping fills the room. The Dauntless cheer and welcome the new initiates in. The initiates find their tables and I go and sit next to Tris. Why wouldn't I? Her eyes seemed to call me over. She stares blankly at the food in front of her. I nudge her. "It's beef. Put this on it." I pass her a bowl of ketchup and Christina questions her. "You've never had a hamburger before?" She asks. Stupid Candors. Tris's eyes widen "No, is that what it's called?" I remember my Abnegation days, all we ever ate was plain food. It was a big shock for me too. "Stiffs eat plain food" I say to Christina. "Why?" She looks at Tris. How am I going to put up with her for a few weeks. "Extravagance is considered self- indulgent and unnecessary" I take a bite out of my burger and listen to their conversation. The whole cafeteria goes quiet and I realise who's here. Eric. We all turn. "Who's that?" Asks Christina. "His name is Eric" I reply "He's a Dauntless leader. "Seriously?" She says "But he's so young" I turn to her "Age doesn't matter here." I look back at Eric and notice him walking straight towards me. Oh no. "Well aren't you going to introduce me?" He asks. I roll my eyes and say "This is Tris and Christina". I gesture at the girls. "Ooh a Stiff" He smirks at Tris. "We'll see how long you last" Tris glares at him then looks away. There's something about her that makes me think that she is more than just a small, Stiff. Her eyes seem to control me. Eric taps his fingers against the table, still staring at Tris. Will you just stop? I felt like saying to him. "So, what have you been doing lately, Four?" He looks at me, now. I adjust my position and say "Nothing, really" Why would I want to talk to you? It is silent for a moment and I tense up. "Max tells me he keeps trying to meet with you, and you don't show up" He smirks at me. "He requested that I find out what's going on with you." Max has been wanting to give me a leader position for years, but I can't accept it, so the best way is to avoid him. "Tell him that I'm satisfied with the position I currently hold" "So he wants to give you a job" Eric grins. "So it would seem" I reply. "And you aren't interested?" Eric seems surprised, as he should be. But it's too dangerous for me to accept. "I haven't been interested for two years" "Well" He says. "Let's hope he gets the point, then." He seems relieved and hits me on the shoulder. He walks away. I sit back with relief and notice Tris does too. "Are you two friends?" She asks. I applaud her for her bravery, maybe she does have a chance in Dauntless. "We were in the same initiate class. He transferred from Erudite" I then realise I gave away the fact that I was a transfer too. "Were you a transfer too?" She asks. I thought I liked her curiosity, now I'm starting to question that. "I thought I would only have trouble with the Candor asking too many questions, now I've got Stiffs too?" Now I act tough. "It must be because you're so approachable." She says smiling. "You know. Like a bed of nails." I stare at her. A chuckle goes through my head. Oh, Tris. "Careful, Tris" I see her checks heat up. I know I've done well. Zeke calls my name from the other table, I grab my plate and get up. I can see Tris glaring at me. I turn and look at her hazel eyes. A shiver of goosebumps runs up my arms. Ah the feeling they give me.

After dinner me and Zeke hang out back at my place. Eric was kind enough to give me the night off. Zeke comes over with a box of the famous Dauntless Cake, by far the greatest thing about being a Dauntless. "How are those Pansycakes?" He nudges me as we sit on my couch digging into the richness of the cake. "Good, apart from the annoying Candors" I roll my eyes thinking about how mad Christina makes me. He laughs. "I heard there's an Abnegation this year. Also the first jumper" He says. My mind races back to the moment when Tris dropped into the net. "Yeah" I say. It would be so embarrassing admitting to him that I had a bit of an affection for her. What? Do I have feelings for Tris? Did I actually just think about it? "Four?" He says. "I swear you have a bad habit of drifting off" I nod at him and we finish off the rest of the cake.
