Recited in hushed tones, whispered behind closed doors and away from the notice of so-called decent people, stories are told. Tales of miracles blossoming into existence within a fortnight. Any wish you desire, whether it be good health, money, fame, or something darker, would be granted - but, of course, at a hefty price. Those who wish to test the legend for legitimacy find themselves on Good Hope Street in the heart of Glimmenshire's underbelly. A treacherous region where crime runs amok and desires run wild, all unaffected by the Glimmenshire Guard's efforts, it is a place full of vagrants and dangerous figures. Only those who have something to prove or those driven to the edge venture across the border. But in the murk of the alleyways and winding side-streets is a beacon of possibility among the dens of man's vices. Around this corner and past that post, under the streetlamp and behind that shop, winds an alleyway inhabited by specters made of shade and mist. No light dwells here, and those who wish to reach the end are required to walk forward with nothing to guide other than a hand on the grimy wall. Out of the gloom juts an island of soft violet light cutting a clearing in the sea of shadows. A handsome-faced shop with but one door and one floor stands at the alley's end. Though small, it exudes a foreboding feeling to all those who witness it.
It is the only thing in this clearing between the buildings, save for a stray cat or two caught in that violet glow. The sign hanging from the eave is engraved with neat gold-painted letters, reading The Skeleton Apothecary. Inky curtains cover the windows from within, concealing the interior from curious eyes who lack the courage to delve far enough into the abyss to see for themselves. Inside awaits the owner - few have seen them and lived long enough to tell the tale. Others, simply choose not to speak of him, abiding by the superstition that if one speaks of something foul to the bone, that something will undoubtedly appear.
And yet rumors lure many inside, enticed by the promise of any wish spoken to become reality. Here, between the worlds that are seen and unseen, our story unfolds.
