It had been a year since Gus died, the worst year of Hazel's life.
July 27th... the first day after Gus left her that she went back to support group.
"Bye then... it will be ok!" her mum reassured her, leaning out of her car window, the overprotective, maternal instinct shining through without camouflage.
Her oxygen cart trundled and shook as she made her way to the church and down to the "literal heart of Jesus". As she reached the bottom of the stairs, she let out a sigh of relief at the sight of a friendly face.
"Hey Isaac," she said as she walked towards her friend "Long time, no see".
"Well that's insensitive," Isaac replied sarcastically. Oh no, thought Hazel. It had completely slipped her mind that he had been without sight, as the result of a long term battle with cancer, for over a year now.
"Only joking Hazel, it's great to hear your voice again. How are you ... ".
