The First

I arrived in New York City for the first time today. (I’m trying to get settled before I start my first semester at the Parsons School for Design in September.) It was nearly 5:00 as I made my way out of the airport, hopped on the subway, and headed to my new apartment just east of Union Square. I walked as fast as I could to my fantastic find of a home and threw my bags down the minute the key opened the door. I breathed in the smell of fresh paint, walked over to my massive bay window and admired the city 5 stories below.

I decided to go out for dinner instead of taking the time to haul all of my groceries around. It seemed that every restaurant I went to was full of people waiting to dine, so I decided to just sit at a little café below my apartment building and eat a grilled cheese (my all time favorite). As much as it killed me to do so, I did a quick run through the grocery store to pick up some necessities. I hiked up the 3 blocks and 5 stories of stairs to finally make it back. After putting everything away I decided to go to bed to prepare for the movers showing up the next morning.

At 11:04 a.m. the following Monday I was woken up by a loud knock on my door (I was still on Arizona time alright?) I fell out of bed and quickly threw my hair into a bun and wrapped a blanket around myself to go answer the door. An impatient second knock sounded just as I was turning the knob. I peeked through the crack in the door  between the wall and the lock only to be completely caught off guard by an extremely attractive guy standing in front of me. I swiftly shut the door, unlatched the top lock, threw my blanket off to the side, and casually stood with my right arm against my head and elbow against the wall. I turned the knob again with my left hand to then be face to face with the boy.

“Hey.” I said oh-so-smoothly.

He seemed to be a little surprised by something and coughed a bit (to ease some of his nerves I suppose.)

“Um.. Hi.”

He then proceeded to just stare at me. I cleared my throat. Yet there he stood, still staring at me.

I adjusted my shoulders so I was standing straight with my arms crossed in front of me.

“You knocked?”

He snapped out of his daze and jumped up a bit, like he just had the best idea.

“Oh! Yeah! I’m Harry.” He eagerly held his hand out for me to shake.

I slowly reached my hand out to his and cautiously said “Lily.”

He smiled widely, “That’s a pretty name.”

I laughed, he’s so strange but.. cute.

“Thanks.”

He smiled again “So, I’m from Parsons, they assigned me to head over here and give you your info.. I know it’s a little early, I wasn’t really supposed to bring it over yet. They told me to wait a few weeks, but I figured if I waited a few weeks I would lose it or forget. But now that I see you I know that I could never forget you but I didn’t know that when they assigned me to you. I just knew we lived close but not as close as we actually do! Surprisingly I live right there!” His rambling ended with him pointing to the apartment right across the hall from mine. My eyes went wide.

“Really?”

“Yeah! I got up this morning leaving myself plenty of time to get to wherever you lived, and then I looked at the address and realized you weren’t far at all.” He took a deep breath as if he had been talking forever. “Sorry, I don’t usually ever talk this much but I’m rather nervous, I didn’t expect you to be so pretty.”
