Sparkling Blue

By @eeveerocks

Serena stood at the edge of the cliff, the cold wind whipping her hair around, staring into the abyss. She didn't know what she found comforting here. There was this feeling of calm that filled her every time she came here: she was oblivious the loud roar of the wind or the cold that slapped her face.

She sat down, her legs dangling in the air. She was here for the hundredth time, and each time for the same reason: her parents.

It had started two years ago when she had gone to middle school. She had come home one day to find her parents in an argument. Terrified, she had run out of the house and stumbled upon this cliff. Now, every day after school, she would come here and wait. Wait for hours, until she was sure her parents wouldn't be fighting.

Today, however, she had come home, hoping that her parents would not be in one of their arguments. Today was Christmas Eve, after all. She had been disappointed. In fact, it was worse than disappointment.

Serena walked up the front pathway, towards her house. She heard no sign of the usual shouting, so she walked in. Her father was packing: packing everything he owned, everything he treasured. Her mom was nowhere to be seen.

"Father?" Serena asked.

"Don't call me that." He growled, stuffing his coat into his bag.

"Where are you going?" Serena asked, fearing the answer.

"A place where people actually care about me." He said, now zipping up his bag.

"But I do care about you!" Serena protested.

"Then what have you been doing these past two years!" Her father demanded. "You could have supported me when your mom and I argued!"

"But I love Mother too!" Serena protested.

"You love your mother, not me." Her father said bitterly. "You are no child of mine. You're probably the trash of someone else and your mother."

With those words, he zipped up his suitcase and strode out of the house, slamming the door behind him. Serena collapsed and took in the silence of the house. Now that she thought about it, her mother should be home. Serena rushed up the stairs, into her mother's room, and was relieved to find her sleeping in her bed. Serena rushed over and hugged her, only to realize something was wrong.

Her mother was cold, as cold as ice. Serena couldn't feel a pulse as she held her mother tightly. She stood up, tearing sprouting from her eyes as she looked around the room. On the nightstand stood a tiny bottle. Serena looked at the label and knew at once what her mother had done.

She had poisoned herself.

Serena watched the fresh tears drip down into the cavern. Maybe it was better not to live. After all, there was no one in this world who cared about her anymore. It would be as easy as slipping off the edge...

"What are you doing?" An unfamiliar voice asked.

Serena jumped a little and turned her head around. In front of her was a raven-haired boy. She recognized him as Ash Ketchum, the most popular boy in Snowbelle Middle.

"Why do you care?" Serena asked, softly.

"Blondie, you were about to kill yourself, and you ask me why do I care?" Ash said.
