I sat in the corner of a cosy café warming my fingers on a caramel latte, trying with everything in me to concentrate on the guide for my procedure. All 16 year olds have to get it, it is meant to stop rebellion in our city, supposedly. My dad says it does, but he created it, of course, he thinks that. My concentration weakens and I notice the overly done up woman sitting opposite me is thinking about her date, I guess. I need him to show up; I need him to be with me. The man across from her is wishing about his girlfriend. Maybe someday she will love me. The desperate and needy people surrounding me, crowd my head with their thoughts. Concentrate Meredith. Concentrate. I forcefully throw my mind wall up and the thoughts disappear and leave me with just my own. Since I can remember, I have not just had my own thoughts, but all the people that are around me. Reading minds meant I could read my parents, meaning I always said the right thing at the right time. I read my brother's thoughts too, and he read mine. Just as soon as I noticed he could read minds, he noticed I could too. We learned together about our powers, and we confused our parents with our mind tricks, but we didn't tell a soul. Growing up with paranormal powers together, meant we were close. Were close, period. Not anymore.

"Damon could you shut the hell up" I said glaring at him through my mirror he sat on the other side of the room in a rumpled t-shirt and jeans," the constant thump in my ears is making my hand shake, I can't put my mascara on!" I put my mascara down and started to deal with my foundation. "Well I'm sorry I didn't know the world revolved around you, princess!" He put down his drumsticks and walked over to my dresser, picking up my mascara when he reached me. "Hey put that down and get the hell out of my side of the bedroom!” I yelled turning to face him. "And don't call me princess!" "What's the point in sticking gloop on your eyelashes? None of the guys even like it!" He said ignoring my comment, he always called me princess and it annoyed the hell out of me! I lunged at him reaching for my mascara. "Well maybe you don't, but your no Ordinary human being!" Finally grabbing it and stuffing it in my makeup drawer. "Yah I guess you will get that from the oldest, always extra ordinary." I walked over to my closet and slipped my heels on, and then I made my way to the stairs." And that's why you have no friends." I said at last while exiting the room. That's my brother, constantly irritating the hell out of me, enjoying it whenever he takes things from me, like my friends for a girlfriend, my mascara and, the one and only day it could all be about me; my birthday. I climbed into the bus scanning the people until my gaze stopped on Lotte, my best friend and my second cousin, or something like that. "Hey Lotte" I say glaring at Damon who was trying to steal my spot. Another thing he wants to take. "Hey Mer!" she said smiling brightly. I love her top today and her hair. How am I related to her and still not look as pretty."I like your top today Lotte!" Mind reading meant I could say everything people wanted to hear. Out of the corner of my eye, I could see Damon shaking his head and laughing silently. What could I say, if they want to hear it why not say it. "So what do you think?" I was too busy thinking, I didn't notice Lotte talking to me.  "Oh um sorry I didn't catch that." her smile faded and was replaced with anger. "You never 'catch' anything I say." she said using her fingers for emphasis. "I'm just a bit tired today sorr- Michelle! How was your date yesterday?” "Oh" she frowned, "Good" It didn't stop me noticing her glance at my idiot brother. "We have to catch up! Later ok ily!" I turned back to Lotte but she was staring out the window, a sad look on her face. Why does she always do that? I dunno, Mer why do you do that??I jerked to the side as Damon sent me a telepathic message. Shut up, I just wanted to catch Michelle before she left..... Is that what you tell yourself, pretty pathetic if you ask me..

"What the hell Lotte!" I said pinning back stray hairs. "What!! I'm not allowed to talk to my own cousin now!" I let out a breath, "Lotte everyone looked at you! They know you’re my closest friend and my 2nd cousin." I saw Damon coming out of school with a sketchbook in hand. "If you haven't noticed Mer, everyone looks at him, every single one of your little posse look at him! Michelle was telling me that he was looking extra hot today!!! EVERYONE LOOKS AT HIM BECAUSE EVERYONE WANTS TO DATE YOUR BROTHER!!!!!!!!!" She took a big gulp of air and just stood waiting for me to scream back. "So you’re not in my posse anymore?" That was the only thing that made its way out of my mouth, even all the other comebacks I had swirling in the back of my mind, this was what came out, and shocked her the most. "No, no I'm not Mer." She turned and walked towards Damon, who was now sitting on the ground sketching. I swear she is the only friend that likes me for me, not my popularity. Correction was my friend.

I pulled my hair back into its bun after my shower and put my glasses on. I hated them they made me look so ugly. Just as if he had read my mind, Damon walked over. "Mer why don't you wear your glasses more often?" I watched him move to my side of the room as I climbed onto my bed and lay down. "Because Damon! I don't want to lose my friends! And I look so ugly." He sighed and looked sad. He looked sad. "Mer.." "What!! Damon!!!" He walked away but then looked back. “You know you had friends and they loved you the way you were. If your so called friends are all about looks maybe they aren't worth keeping..." He turned and walked away. "You look beautiful, Mer, you look like my sister." He didn't turn back. I don't know when I fell asleep but now someone is shaking me awake. "Meredith wake up wake up." I lazily opened my eyes, and through my half closed eyes, I saw mums pained face. "Mum what is it!" I said sitting upright. "Uncle Ky... He's dying" Uncle Ky isn't my uncle, but he is my mothers. We call him that anyway because it’s like he is our uncle, and my mother was 17 when she had me and Damon, so her brother isn't married. "We need to go to the hospital but...." I ripped the duvet of my bed and ran to my drawers grabbing anything I could find. "Meredith." "Shoes, I need shoes." I said running to my closet. "Meredith stop." I stopped. "Meredith this means so much more than your uncle's death." "How could you say that!!" I said anger rising. "He was meant to last longer. This wasn't meant to fall on you two." "Mum just say it!!" “You are the only ones left to stop it, you have to stop it Meredith do you hear me you have to, no matter what!" "What Mum! What!!" The distress and sorrow filled my mother’s eyes. "You have to stop your-" "Meredith. Brittney. We need to go. Now." She dropped her gaze and walked away from me, leaving me as confused as ever. "Mum..." I whispered..
