The next day, Gotham was still the same. Desolated, isolated, and dark. The city wasn't welcome to new visitors, due to the lack of interest.
However, there were many criminal uprisings formed in the city. The GCPD, led now by an elderly and older Commissioner Gordon, tried to put an end to it.
"Gordon's inviting you for his resignation and retirement," noted Carrie to Bruce. He woke up in his bed, tired still. "Ugh...give me a minute," he told her.
He snapped his back as he stood himself up from the bedside. The bed squeaked as he got up. Bruce then walked downstairs slowly, using the help of a walking cane.
Carrie had made him and her a nice breakfast meal in the kitchen. Bruce walked inside the kitchen, always trying to forget of Alfred's past presence.
"How was your sleep?" she asked him. Bruce shrugged it off, focusing more on the meal. Carrie looked out the window, and noticed it peachy and sunny for the first time in a while.
"Gotham looks beautiful from here. Come take a look!" she exclaimed to Bruce. He was just finishing up his french toast. "Really?" he asked.
Bruce then nearly tripped over his chair as he attempted to get up from his seat. Carrie walked over to him to help him walk. "I got it, I got it" he said.
Bruce approached the kitchen window, peering outside. Carrie really was right. The landscape of the city was mesmerizing and enthralling. The grass was green, sky blue, and the sun rising.
"I...I've never seen it like this in so long..." Bruce said to himself. He was quite impressed and astonished by the sight. Carrie smiled, finally seeing his smile.
Suddenly, Bruce's wrinkled smile turned back into a frown, as he looked away from the window. "Enough of that. Just get dressed if we're going to Gordon's retirement ceremony," he instructed the young teenager.
Carrie nodded, disappointed at the same time. She ran off, as Bruce struggled to walk up the steps with his cane. He needed some strength back, using most of it from last night's fight.
Bruce dressed up in a black tuxedo, sporting a blue flower in his pocket. He looked at his old self in the mirror, before settling a call for a limousine.
Carrie waited for him outside the front door of Wayne Manor. Bruce thanked her for inviting him to Gordon's ceremony. "He's your friend after all," she noted in reply.
Bruce and Carrie sat together in the back seat of the reserved limousine, and they drove into Gotham City.
They passed by some old protest signs of "Find the Clown and Jester!". Bruce had remembered the desperate search for Joker and Harley Quinn years ago.
It failed due to no evidence, and the GCPD made the presumed assumption that they died. Bruce noticed his Wayne Enterprises was no longer standing, due to his wealth and health falling behind.
"It's been a hectic long year hasn't it?" asked the limo driver. "Yeah it has.." Bruce replied and sighed. The limousine parked at the newly built Gotham Diner.
It was luxurious just like the last diner, which was destroyed years ago by the Joker and costing news reporter Vicki Vale's life. Bruce and Carrie stepped out, only to be blinded by Gotham News.
"We're hearing that the Batman has gone out of hiding last night! Care to comment, Mr. Wayne?" were most of the questions. Bruce shunned them away, as he and Carrie went inside.
Commissioner Gordon sat at a panel with several other police officers. A young and aspiring woman was at the pedestal, speaking out to the crowd.
"I, Ellen Yindel, am taking over the role of Commissioner of Gotham. Mayor Stevenson here has accepted my promotion, and I will gladly fill in what is deemed challenging," the young woman spoke through the microphone.
Commissioner Gordon was looking tired as ever, due to his extremely old age around mid-70's. A police officer had to wave a fan near his face to keep him awake.
Bruce and Carrie got seated, and listened in to the panel. The mayor of Gotham City, Ray Stevenson, walked up to the pedestal the woman stood at and was ready to give her the oath.
The audience cheered. Commissioner Gordon then got help to stand up and walked over with the GCPD handbook.
He was ready, accompanied by Mayor Stevenson, to say the oath to Mrs. Ellen Yindel. Her family in the front row was excited.
"Repeat after me. I, Ellen M. Yindel, do swear to serve the position of Chief Commissioner of the Gotham City Police Department. I promise to to serve, protect and defend the city of Gotham to the best of my abilities, so help me God," Mayor Stevenson uttered.
Ellen replied and repeated the statement. Mayor Stevenson and Commissioner Gordon looked at each other with a smile, and each shook Ellen's hand.
"Congratulations, Commissioner Yindel," they both said to her. Commissioner Yindel was humbled.
"Well deserved," Carrie whispered to Bruce. He disagreed, missing Gordon's position already. Jim Gordon then sat back down, exhausted.
Bruce related with him, since Gordon was potentially his last connection to the past. The meeting was about to come to an end, when suddenly a few citizens burst into the building.
"There's criminals walking among the streets, shooting!!" they screamed. The crowd gasped.
Commissioner Yindel knew her first task was here, and she needed to take immediate initiative.
"Officers! Get on out there and threaten the criminals! We have to begin flushing this city's wave of crime starting now!" she exclaimed.
Bruce's eyes widened. He knew the criminals had to do with last night, possibly the Italian...Corps.
"This can't be fucking possible!" Bruce yelled. He ran off from Carrie to head to the panel. Gordon was sitting slump in his chair.
"Gordon!! Ellen doesn't know what she's fucking doing!! Those criminals aren't just any ordinary criminals! They're a new generation of Italian Corps!" Bruce screamed.
"Bullshit!" Gordon replied. The other officers looked at Bruce with disbelief. "You can't be serious, Mr. Wayne!" Mayor Stevenson said.
"It's true!! If you umm-read the umm-news reports, Batman mentioned being in contact with the Italians!! They're back and probably fucking stronger than ever!" screamed Bruce in anger.
"Firstly, keep your tone of language down. Secondly, how do we know they're dangerous? Ellen and her men can take of it," Mayor Stevenson replied.
Bruce grabbed ahold of the elderly Gordon with some of his strength. "We're both old fucks here. Trust me right? The Italian Corps are indeed back," he told him. Gordon was shocked.
"Give Ellen some time and we'll uh-discuss how to-" Gordon began to say but was interrupted by gunfire.
"We've got them covered!" yelled Commissioner Yindel. She directed the officers back outside the diner.
The criminals retreated after a long confrontation. Shots were fired, and a couple citizens and officers were injured. No deaths.
Bruce and Carrie were escorted together into the limousine. Commissioner Yindel approached the backseat window to speak with Bruce.
"I heard you mentioned me not knowing what I'm doing. Listen here...don't say things like that again or consequences will made towards you Mr. Wayne. Got it?" she asked him threateningly.
"We'll see. Just keep your shit together like I am," Bruce replied. The limo driver stepped on it, and they drove willingly away from Commissioner Yindel.
The city of Gotham may not be safe again.
