Chapter Two: A Troubled Past
Sage's POV
I threw on some dark American Eagle jeans and a blue and white baseball-style t-shirt and headed to the kitchen to get some breakfast. My mom, Carrie, was cooking eggs and toast for my brother Walker, who will be in 9th grade, and I's first day of school here in Georgia.
"Good morning, Sage. Did you sleep well honey?"
"I slept okay I guess mom."
My mom looked concerned.
"Sage, honey, are you okay?"
No I thought. And you're not either Mom and neither is Walker.
My parents got divorced this past summer after eighteen years of marriage. My dad, named Bo, is an absolute douche bag. He had apparently been cheating on my mom with his sister's best friend for the past three years. Bo would "go to work" which actually mean's that he would go to Amy's place and play kissy face. The way my mom caught Bo cheating was because one day she decided to bring him his lunch at work because he forgot it, and he wasn't there. My mom got extremely worried about Bo, so she called his sister, my Aunt Tamara. Aunt Tamara cracked and told my mom the truth: he had been cheating on her for the past three years. My mom went to Amy's house and found Bo there.
Let's just say things did not turn out as planned, and Bo and my mom filed for a divorce eighteen hours later.
My mom was still staring at me, waiting for a reply.
"Yeah Mom, I'm fine. I'm just worried about you."
My mom looked at me and a tear rolled down her face. She walked over to me and gave me a hug. She then whispered in my ear,
"We'll get through it, Sage."
Just after we hugged for about a minute, Walker came hopping down the stairs. Mom wiped her face and turned to back to the stove to finish breakfast. After a silent breakfast between my mom, brother, and I, Walker and I headed to our new school.
After our five minute drive to Creekview High School, I dropped off Walker at the front door, where all the other freshman were being dropped off by their parents. All of their parents drove Mercedes, BMW's, Volvo's and Lexus's. Damn I thought, these kids are rich. I suddenly felt stupid dropping off Walker in my 2007 Toyota Tundra.
After dropping off Walker, I headed to the student parking lot, and parked toward the back. I put my Grizzly parking permit that I ordered over the summer on my mirror, and then I saw her.
She parked her white four door Jeep Wrangler right beside me. The most beautiful girl I had ever seen. She was riding with her friends, and some boy. Her boyfriend I immediately thought. She was wearing a cute aqua dress that perfectly matched her eyes. Her hair was stunning and her skin was beautiful. God I thought, this girl is a goddess.
All of a sudden, her blonde friend pointed at me and I blushed. I have a problem with blushing. The beautiful girl smiled and waved at me, and I waved back. I hopped out of my truck and began talking to her.
"What's your name," I said. "I'm new here."
"I'm McKinley. McKinley Williams. And these are my best friends, Lauren, Kylie, and Alex."
Without even thinking, I said, "McKinley. A beautiful name for a beautiful girl."
McKinley immediately blushed. Oh God, I've embarrassed her.
McKinley smiled. She then said, "Well thank you! You're not so bad yourself Mr.... wait what's your name?"
"Sage" I said immediately.
"Right. Mr. Sage. Well, class is going to start in about five minutes, would you like to walk with us? Alex and I have Coach Nicholson's economics class first period."
"Hey! So do I! I would love to walk with you and Alex."
McKinley and I continued chatting as we walked to first period together.
This might not be such a bad year after all.
