      John's POV:

"Good night you kiddos." Mr.Washington smiled as he turned off the light and walked out. Once he was out of sight, I sat up and looked out the window. It was raining. Perfect! I love rain...well sometimes. I don't like the loud booms and the bright flashes. Those scare me. Mr.Washington says they can't hurt me, but Aaron says that they can kill you.
I grabbed my blanket and crawled out the window.
"J-John?" A raspy voice ask. "W-where you going?"
I turn around to see Hercules siting up, holding his bear to him self. "I'll be back before you know I'm gone." I whisper. "Cover for me." I smile.
"I can't...only big boys like you can lie to Mr.Washington..." He says.
"You're a big boy too Herc! You gotta watch Lafayette for me!" I looked over at Laf, who was already asleep, tangled in his blankets and sucking his thumb.
       "But you're 6...I'm 5..."
"5 year olds are big boys! 4 year olds are big babies! And you're not 4 anymore!" I giggle. "Bye herc!" I jump out onto the the fire escape and close the window. I wrap my blanket around me and slide down the escape. I jump into the mud. My footie pajamas, soaked in mud. It was dark. Nothing but crickets and rain were the sounds you could hear. I started running down the entrance. It took a few seconds to get to the main fence. I was still small enough to crawl through the bars.
Finally on the road. Our house was at the end of a street. In a community for mostly old people. Sometimes we see other kids playing, but not many. Mr.Washington says they're visiting their grandparents. Lucky. If Mr.Washington is sick, annoyed, or just wants to go out, sometimes an old person comes to watch us. There isn't that many of us. More like a single father taking care of 17 kids. Yay.
I walked down the street, poking each car as I walked past, praying that one of the alarms didn't go off.
         Poke.
         Poke.
         Poke.
         Poke.
         Poke.
Porch light. Oh thank god, that scared me.
        Poke.
Poke. BEEP BEEP BEEP. I ran. Nothing more to say. I continued to run for 5 minutes, soon reaching the school. By now, I was in a pretty populated place now. Car were driving by every second, splashing rain from the gutters. I walked up a road, splashing in every puddle I saw. Mr.Washington doesn't let us play in the rain that much so this was my only chance.
I soon heard crying coming from an alley way. I turned towards it. "Hello?" I asked. I followed the sound. I could see a dark figure, a silhouette. They were hugging their knees, shaking. "Hi! I'm John!" I said, smiling. "What's your name?" I walked closer and watched as I was able to see him more clearly.
He looked up at me. "M-my mommy always called me Alex..." He whimpered. I nodded.
"Where's your mommy now?"
"I-I don't know...she left with my daddy a few hours ago...never came back...I went to go find her...and then I got lost." He whimpered.
"I can take you to the police station." I smiled. "I go there a lot when I lose Mr.Washington!"
       "M-mr.washington?" He asked.
       "Yup! He's kinda my daddy."
"You call your dad by his name?"
"Well...He isn't my real daddy..." I explained. I looked around. "I-I need to get back home..." I whimpered. "Do you wanna come with me?"
"N-no...do you have any food? I haven't eaten in days..."
"No. I can bring some tomorrow after breakfast!" I smiled and handed him my blanket. "Here you go! I'll be back around 8! I promise! Meet me here!" He slowly nodded. He took the blanket and cuddled if. I smiled and ran off.
