I was five when the man of the shadows first started visiting. Keeping me safe was his job, or so he told me. He always showed up at the same exact time and leave when it became light. I would be laying in bed when all of the sudden my bed would start to shake and then he would crawl out from under.
I once asked him how he got here, he just shook his head and said that one day I would learn. Being as little as I was I accepted that answer without question. Sometimes when mommy or daddy got mad and began to hit me, he would come early and protect me.
As I grew up his visits became more and more common until eventually he became a part of everyday life. He and I would get up, go to school, occasionally go out somewhere fun and then come home. The older I became the more looks I got from strangers for talking to a random shadow.
What they didn't know was my Gentleman of the Shadows could go into anyone's shadow and occasionally come out into the real world in his true form. On those occasions we would enjoy a quiet day out and about.
However, recently my Gentleman stopped visiting and even leaving messages. Of course I was concerned and began to look for him. Unfortunately no one wanted to talk about whether their shadow was acting strange recently or if they had seen a tall, man with pitch black skin and blood red eyes wearing a dark grey trench coat and light grey fedora.
My mother and father eventually became concerned with me and shipped me off to a clinic for the mentally insane but one day, one day I will break out and find him again.
After all, nothing can separate true love.......
