Bruises

After being thrown back into my cell, I looked over to my roommate, Josh.  He looked like shit, he had a black eye and was covered in bruises.

"What happened to you" I laughed.

"Shut up" He rolled his eyes.

I knew what happened, Josie, she had been beating us up since we got thrown in together. She was brought in for dealing drugs for a gang. She was convinced that we were wastes of life. Though it wasn't too far from the truth.

"Sorry." I replied sympathetically and in all seriousness.

He had been thrown in around the same time as me for killing his sister. I never asked him about it though. I still don't know anything. When I got here I was a lot more quiet and I'm sure they just assumed I was ignoring them.

"Hey Josh?" I asked

"Yeah?"

"Why'd you kill your sister?"

I immediately regretted asking him. There was obviously more to it that he wasn't telling me, I didn't want to push the matter more than I already did.

"Why'd you kill your father?" he responded finally. Of course he would respond with a question, one that I didn't want to answer

"You know I don't want to talk about it." I sighed in defeat and rested my head back down on my pillow. I might as well go to sleep now, tomorrow I would be covered in bruises because of Josie. I looked over at Josh to see him studying my face.

"So there's more too it?" He looked over, his voice traced with hints of cockiness.

"Nope." I turned on the cot so my back was facing him. "It's not like you've told me anything about your sister yet. I don't even belong here, I mean don't get me wrong, I KILLED someone! I legit KILLED someone. But at least I had a reason, I don't know about you, but I HAD A REASON." I stopped when I realized I was getting hysterical.

I heard Josh sigh from the other side of the cell. "I know, I'm sorry. I just- I don't know, it's not easy for me to talk about it, you know?"

He sounded off so I turned to look at him. When I saw his face I was shocked to see something other than a cocky grin on his face, his eyes were filled with tears.

"I didn't mean to assume your situation..." I trailed.

"It's fine" and with that he turned so I couldn't see him. We didn't talk for the rest of the day, but at least I had made progress. When I first met him he barely spoke 10 words to me.
