"I was doing just fine, till you messed with my mind..."

- Distracted by KSM

Nathan:

I woke to the sound of voices the next morning. After Tori practically told me she didn’t want me and then kicked me out of the dance studio, I went back to the flat and just stayed in my room, not eating, not drinking, just lying in bed and thinking. I walked out into the main room in my boxers to find Tori standing on a stool, wearing a fit, light blue dress. She didn’t have shoes on and there was a man with a tape measure hanging around his neck, poking at Tori with a needle. She had her arms stretched out horizontally as the man continued poking her with needles,

“This suite is way too big” Tom’s voice said, walking past me in a tux

What the hell is going on?

“That’s why we get things fitted” Tori said, smirking

“Sykes, go put some clothes on” Tom groaned, glaring at me

After pulling on a wrinkled shirt and a pair of jogging pants, I returned to the living room to still see Tori standing on the stool,

“Can someone please tell me what’s going on?” I asked, sitting on the couch, watching Tori

“Tom and I are getting fitted for my sister’s wedding” Tori replied, focusing her eyes on the man

“Day after the competition, I’m flying out with Tori and Ty to Miami” Tom added

“Really? When’s the wedding?” I asked casually

“Two weeks from tomorrow” Tori answered “I was supposed to get fitted when we were in New York, but when we got through, Veronica moved the fitting to a later date, so she could fly, Paul here, out”

I just nodded

She looked stunning in the dress, it showed off her beautiful curves and stopped mid-thigh,

“I’m one of the bridesmaids” she said

“And I’m her groomsman” Tom smirked at her

I put on the best smile I could, I wanted to be happy for her but I just…couldn’t

I stared off, thinking as Paul continued sticking needles in Tori’s dress. Was my trip to jail distracting her or was I distracting her? Shouldn’t she be looking for a distracting when she’s so stressed out? I definitely would. I understand this is for college; she wants to make something of herself, but why? She’s got all the money she could ever have? She was really smart, she could get into any university she wanted and her father could definitely pay her way in as well…

“Nathan…I hope you can understand what I meant yesterday” she said as Tom stepped out for a smoke

“Yeah, sure…I’m…a distraction” I said, glaring at her

She sighed

“If you want to be mad at me fine, but I just want you to know this is a big deal for me” she replied

“Well, Tori, if I’m such a distraction, I might as well not go to the competition tonight, seeing as that might distract you from doing well” I said sharply

“If you don’t go, then fine…one more thing I don’t need to worry about” she said, getting defensive

“Fine” I hissed

“Fine” she spat

“I guess my eight pound necklace wasn’t good enough for you, then, eh?” I said

“What?” she asked

“Yeah, daddy’s got you living it up in Miami, you’ve got everything you need and enough money left over to pay your way through college, university, whatever and you think a talent scout is your only way in?” I growled

“Is it too hard to understand that maybe I don’t want to be paid for through college, that maybe I want to get in for talent?” she asked

Before I could answer, Tom walked back in. Tori’s anger seemed to vanish at the sight of Tom. Paul told her to step down and that she could take off the dress. She smirked as she dusted ash off Tom’s shirt. Afterwards, she went changed in his room, coming back out in skin hugging jeans, a black undershirt and a dark blue top. She carefully handed the dress to Paul, who kissed her on the cheek,

“I’ll see you tonight, yeah?” Tom asked as she got ready to leave

“Of course…I’ll be looking for you and your crazy friends” she smiled

She cast me a sidelong glance before quietly leaving. Her words were starting to sink in. I could see why she wanted to win the competition, to prove she was talented enough to get into the school she wanted, to prove to her family that she didn’t need all the money they had, to prove to herself that she was good enough…

I felt the guilt settle in me as I wanted to go find her and apologize, but I couldn’t. That would be too dramatic and the last thing she needs is some dramatic scene hours before the competition,

“She’s grown up so much” Paul commented to Tom

“Yeah, she’s too mature for her age though” Tom replied jokingly

“I’ll say, eighteen and working for herself…when I was eighteen, I was living with my parents, letting them pay for school, and the biggest problem being my break-up, make-up relationship with a girl” he sighed

“Same here” Tom nodded “Oh, and Nath… Tori told me about what she said” he went on

“What?” I asked, my name pulling me out of my thoughts

“How she thought it’d be best if you two…” he trailed off

“Oh, right” I mumbled

“Well… I’ve decided not to pound your face in…. and it’s not because she told me not to” he said

“Thank you?” I said, unsure how to reply to that

“You’re welcome” he shrugged....
