Valleri walked quietly with her head down, she knew as soon as they got home she was going to hear it. She could hear Daddy walking behind her, neither of them said anything. She was more scared about what Daddy was going to do to David, she knew his Mom couldn't afford to lose her job, and Daddy could be mean when he wanted to be, very mean.

"Daddy I-"

"I suggest you think very carefully about your choice of words before you go any further Valleri"

"You can't take away their jobs Daddy, David didn't do anything"

"They work for me, I can do whatever I please about their jobs"

"But Daddy that's not fair! I was the one who-"

"Life isn't fair Valleri, and he's going to learn that the hard way"

"You can't do that!"

"I can, and I will. That's final. This conversation is over, and you are not to see him again" He pulled the front door open and she followed him inside.  "From now on you will have an escort every time you leave this house."

“Daddy no! You can’t!”

“You are my daughter and you will do as I say, that’s final, I don’t want to hear another word” he unbuttoned the cuffs of his sleeves as she stood there silently. “I suggest you go to your room, and stay there this time, I’ll be up to check on you later”

Valleri rolled her eyes but started up the stairs as she was told Yeah you’ll check on me just to make sure I didn’t take off again she thought. He said goodnight but she just climbed to her bedroom and shut the door behind her. She pulled back the covers and climbed into bed; she laid there for a while just thinking about David, about how she was going to find a way around Daddy’s new rules, he was never going to let her out of his sight after tonight.  She drifted off into sleep hoping all of this was nothing more than an awful nightmare.

Valleri woke the next morning fairly early, the sunlight splashing golden rays throughout her bedroom. She got dressed, draping the red pajamas over her desk chair; she pulled her hair back into a ponytail before she went down to the dining room for breakfast. Daddy was already sitting at the table flipping through the newspaper. He looked up as she came into the room and smiled. “Good morning Princess”

She didn’t say anything, just gave him a small smile before sitting down at the table picking a few pieces of fruit off of the platter in front of her.

“Not in a talking kind of mood this morning?”

“Not really Daddy”

“Are you mad about something?”

She slammed her fist down on the table glaring at him. “You know damn well what I’m mad about”

“Valleri there’s no need for an attitude”

She scoffed and shook her head. “Why are you pretending like last night never happened?!”

“I’m not pretending like anything Princess”

“YES YOU ARE! JUST BECAUSE YOU DON’T LIKE IT DOESN’T MEAN IT DIDN’T HAPPEN, OR DID YOU CONVIENIENTLY FORGET THAT YOU FORCED ME OUT OF DAVID’S HOUSE LAST NIGHT?!”

“Valleri, there’s no need to yell”

She threw her arms in the air in frustration. “I don’t know why I even bother.” She shoved her chair back from the table and threw her napkin on top of her plate. “Excuse me”

“Sit down”

“NO, I’M SICK AND TIRED OF YOU TELLING ME WHAT TO DO AND HOW TO DO IT AND WHEN, I’M DONE DADDY, I’M DONE WITH YOU AND YOUR STUPID FUCKING RULES AND YOUR STUPID FUCKING LIFE!”
