Chapter 1: When I was Ten I Met My Best Friend

Like all ten year olds, I liked to be creative, daydream, and watch cartoons. But there was something that made me stand out from everyone else.
I was dyslexic, it was very hard to read and write, and because of this I was made fun of for it day after day. I was so embarrassed that I didn't even want to go to school anymore.
One day my teacher asked me to read aloud to the class. I froze and tried to get myself out of it, but I failed.
I was supposed to say, "The boy in the yellow coat ran home in the rain." But instead I said, "the boy in the allum kot ran hom in the ran."

The whole class burst out in laughter, even our teacher let out a chuckle. I got up a ran out of the classroom and into one of the supply closets. Unwanted tears ran down my face and I furiously wiped them off my cheeks.

Suddenly the closet door opened, I let a gasp escape my lips out of being startled. I turned around to see Zach, the smartest kid in our class. He stepped towards me with a smile on his face, but not a teasing smile, a gentle, warm, welcoming smile.

"Why are you in here?" Asked while whipping more tears away.

"I could ask you the same question." He answered back.

As soon as he said that I started to sob. He wrapped his arms around me in a hug. "Don't cry." He comforted me, "I'll teach you how to read, and you'll be able to read better than all of them!" He said confidently.

This made me look up at him, "You'd teach me?" I asked in total shock.

"Why wouldn't I? You seem like you need a friend." He hugged me again before letting go.

"Thank you." I said, a genuine smile crossing over my face.

"Come on we should go back to class." We both walked out of the closet and back to class.

Like Zach promised, he helped me learn how to read without mixing up different letters. But we also built a strong friendship. We would hang out almost everyday, at the movies, each other's house's, the ice cream shop.

I was thankful for meeting Zach, because he helped me with more than just my reading skills.
