I get to school early the next day, for some reason energized even though I had to wake up at the ungodly hour of 6 am.
I sit down on one of the front steps and wait. And wait. And wait some more until someone shows up. Oddly enough, the first person to school aside from me is Skyler. He sees me sitting on the steps and comes over to say hi.
"Hey." He says.
"Hey yourself." I confidently say back. He doesn't seem like the type of person to be at school so early. He seems more like the type to show up late and not care. I expected him to sit somewhere else and completely ignore me. So I'm surprised when he takes a seat next to me on the steps in front of the school.
"Why are you at school so early?" I ask him.
"Oh, I'm just trying to catch up on homework and stuff like that. I can't do it at my house. It's to loud." He says.
"How is it to loud?" I ask him, genuinely curios.
"I have three little sisters. And my mom is always working so it's up to me to take care of them." He says.
I never thought about him having any siblings. I just assume everyone is an only child until they mention having any brothers or sisters.
"Oh. I only have an older sister. She's 23." I say just as his friends pull into the parking lot. He looks over at me and says he has to go and quickly goes over to his friends. I watch him for a few minutes. After saying hey to them he walks past me and inside the school to find a quiet place to do his homework.
I see his friends messing around on their phones and get the bright idea to text Violet.
About twenty minutes later I see Violet's car in the parking lot. Then she sits down next to me and just looks at me expectantly. "Well? Is there actually a reason you wanted me to be here so early or did you just want to be graced with my presence?" She says with a completely straight face.
I can't help but laugh. After a good two minutes of pure unadultered laughter, I finally stop and wipe the tears from my eyes, still shaking my head and muttering "graced with her presence." When I look back over to her she's scowling at me.
"It wasn't that funny." Violet said bitterly.
I just look at her. "Yeah. It really was. Anyway the reason I wanted you to come so early is because I wanted to know if you think it would be a good idea to fight Natalie. And now I wanna talk to you about the normal civilized conversation I just had with Skyler." I say way to proudly.
She starts laughing. "You? Fight Natalie? Not a good idea. She wouls whoop your ass. I still think revenge is the best way to go. Enough about Natalie. Tell me about your talk with Skyler."
I glare at her. Natalie would not whoop my ass if I fought her. "I would so win if I fought Natalie. But anyway, I didn't know that Skyler came to school so early. Apparently he does so he can finish up homework and stuff like that. DId you know he has three sisters?" I say quickly in one breath.
"Jeez Val. Slow down. I know your excited but damn. Breathe, would you? That's all you talked about though? His sisters?" She asks me, unimpressed.
I look at her slightly offended. Since when was not looking like an idiot in front of Skyler not an accomplishment to be proud of? "Yes bitch. His sisters. I'm happy he talked to me at all." I say. "How are things with Ronnie? Have you talked to him lately?" I ask.
Vi immediately starts blushing. "Yeah. We were texting last night." She says.
"You gave him your number?" I ask her, astounded.
"Of course I gave him my number. How else am I supposed to talk to my soul mate."
"Really? Your soul mates now? You met him like 3 days ago." I said as I looked at her skeptically.
"Whatever Val. You'll see. He's totally the one."
"Of course he is."
We talk about random things until the bell rings, signalling that it's time to go to first period.
