The ride to the party was unnerving. Maybe not for Brendan and Mika who scream sung every trap song that came on the radio, but a legion of times did Leighton and I make awkward eye contact.
When we arrived to the party and finally found a parking spot, I unbuckled and was out of the car in less than a second. I could not breath in that car.
Now I can breath.
"I'm gonna go look for a drink." I said turning to Mika.
"Go wild tiger, but not too wild. You know what I mean?" She laughed.
I nodded, I swear some of the things that come out of her mouth. I quickly turned around and facing me was a huge brick house with greek letters on it. Over a hundred people jumping, dancing, laughing, and singing filled the front yard, all holding red solo cups in one hand and a phone in the other. I had my phone, all I need now is a drink.
Walking inside it was even more packed. You know how in the movies you see people sliding down the railings on staircases, and swinging from chandeliers? Two guys in boxers were doing both of these things. I pushed through a long hallway and at the end sure enough there was the kitchen with at least six coolers filled to the max with an assortment of drinks.
"Nah you don't want any of that." A voice behind my said as I was examining my choices.
I turned around, it was Leighton.
"What?" I didn't know what else to say.
"Here, let me make you a drink." He said opening the fridge.
"Um okay. I think the guys who threw this only want us to drink whats in the coolers though."
He turned and laughed. "Love, I threw this party."
My face reddened.
"You're part of this frat?" I asked.
"Yep." He said, pouring a collection of different drinks together and mixing them.
I watched him. His sleeves were rolled up and I could see the veins in his arms. He must've felt me staring because he turned around and caught me. I looked down, embarrassed.
"Here try it." He said handing the drink to me.
"Thanks." I smiled. As I reached for the cup our fingers touched, we both looked up, but I immediately looked back down at the cup.
Whatever the drink was, it was so good.
"Damn, that's good what's in it?" I asked.
"Doesn't matter." He winked, and then started pulling something out of his pocket. A box of cigarettes.
I stared waiting to see what he was going to do with them. Sure enough he grabbed out one and lit it.
"Care for one?" He asked, cigarette to the side of his lip.
"Um no thanks. I don't smoke." I declined the offer. I was kind of let down that such this beautiful charming guy smoked.
"Such a good girl." He laughed, then blew smoke into my face.
"Yep, that's me. Um actually, I'm gonna go try to find Mika. Thanks for the drink."
"Wait, Addilyn."
The way he said my name.
The way he fucking said MY name, might've made my heart skip a beat.
I turned around.
"You forgot your phone." He said, holding my phone in his hands.
I quickly grabbed it out of his hands. "Thanks."
I rushed out of that room faster than I had rushed to get dressed, and faster than the speed I got out of the car. I walked outside to the back yard where there was a huge patio with an inground pool, hot tub, and fire pit. There was also two table tennis tables. Kids were playing beer pong, dancing, and of course people grinding on one another and smoke raising into the air. Typical party.
I spotted Mika in a group of people all dancing. I walked over.
"Hey girl, what took you so long getting a drink." She practically had to scream over the music.
"Oh um. There were so many options it took me a while to decide." I stuttered with my words.
She rolled her eyes but didn't say anything. Mika is the type of friend who doesn't need to know everything even if she knows I'm lying.
For a while we all just danced. I knew all the songs, and to be honest I really enjoyed myself. I met a few girls who were in sororities and they were all super friendly and it seemed as if they liked me as well. Which is good.
The night was good, until the night wasn't good.
I was spinning around, laughing and dancing, until I wasn't.
I was drunk, so yes my memory may be hazy, but I did see Leighton dancing and kissing and grabbing some random girl.
It didn't hurt me... I don't even know him, why would it hurt me? But it made me stop laughing and dancing. And it made my night not good. Not as good. Because once again.
I am telling myself it didn't hurt me.
