LEO
As soon as I dove into the water, I began to butterfly kick forward, holding onto Lily tightly so we wouldn't loose each other. The lifeguards swam after us, shouting desperately, but we just kept swimming farther and farther until they gave up on catching us. When we were sure that they had lost us, Lily and I paused and stuck our heads out of the water. We had been swimming for about 5 minutes, but already I couldn't see anything except for the ocean on any side.
"Where do you think he is?" Lily asked.
"I don't know," I answered, feeling really stupid about what we had done"I'm really sorry about the idea. It was so stupid. Now we're lost in the middle of the ocean and we haven't made any progress on finding the missing kid. We just added to the problem. Now instead of one missing kid there are three. And we are most definatly getting expelled for this."
"It's okay," Lily told me, "We all make mistakes. Anyway, now what do we do?"
"Try to swim back I guess," I suggested.
"Which way is it?" Lily asked me, looking around at the vast ocean that surrounded us.
"I think it's that way," I said pointing to our left, "But I really don't know. It could be any direction."
"Let's just try it anyway." Lily suggested, "it's better than nothing."
"Okay." I agreed," We'll swim for five minutes and then turn around if we can't see the beech. That way we won't swim in the wrong direction for to long."
We both dove under the ocean surface and began to swim forward, trying not to lose sight of each other. As I was butterfly kicking, a thick bushy bunch of seaweed appeared in my view. I tried to turn around so I wouldn't bump into it, but I was swimming to fast. A few seconds later, I crashed into it and got completely tangled with strands of seaweed. I was stuck so badly that I couldn't even turn my head around to loosen the tight knots that the plant had formed around me.
"Lily!" I called, "I'm tangled in some stupid plant. Can you help me out."
"What?" She screamed back, turning around.
"I'm stuck in a piece of seaweed," I answered her, trying not to laugh. It was kind of pathetic when I thought about it.
"So you're still as helpless as you were in fourth grade?" She asked me, bursting out with laughter, "Is this like the time you threw the ball over the fence and then just waited for someone to go and get it?"
"Actually, that was you." I reminded her, "You threw it over the fence, and I had to climb over it so that you wouldn't get in trouble."
"Whatever." Lily told me, "Anyway, how did you manage to get stuck."
"What do you think?" I asked her, a little annoyed, "I swam into it."
Lily swam over to me and looked at the plant that had entangled me. "You really are tangled with that plant," she told me and began to pull on my feet, causing my head to skid across the ocean floor.
"Ouch," I said as my head hit a sharp rock, "Do you mind being a little more gentle?"
"Do you want me to get you out or not?" Lily asked, "Because if you don't I'll just leave you here and then you'll be stuck her forever."
"Get me out, but please make it less jerky." I suggested.
"I'm trying the best I can," Lily informed me, and then gave me a huge tug and pulled me loose and caused me to ram into a rock one final time.
After I pushed got up, we started to swim again. Out of the corner of my eye, I could see something that looked a lot like the seaweed I had swam into so I turned to avoid it.
"Leo?" Something called my name from where the seaweed shaped thing was, "Lily? Why are you guys here?"
"Who is that?" Lily screamed, "And how do you know our names. Leo, do you think it's a sea creature monster like the ones in the fairy tails?"
I tried to seem calm, but I was truly freaked out. The shape got closer, and I could make out the shape of a person who was also swimming. As we got closer to him, his features came into focus.
"Sam?" I asked him, recognizing the face of my best friend from second grade.
"How'd you get her Fishy?" Sam asked me, smiling and pretending to punch me like we used to when I was friends with him. I remembered how we thought that we were extremely cool because we would always punch each other as a greeting and call each other "secret" names. Mine was Fishy and his was Otter.
"Lily and I decided to look for a kid who went missing from our school. How'd you get here, Otter?" I asked Sam.
"Oh, I was swimming, but there was a storm. I was supposed to get out of the water, but the ocean was so nice. Now, I'm completely lost and have no idea where I am." Sam answered me.
"Leo, you're freaking me out. Who is this kid?" Lily asked me, her voice still panicky.
"Oh, It's my best friend from second grade, Sam" I informed her.
"Wait a minute," Lily said, "Didn't the detention guide say that some kid named Sammy was missing."
"Yeah," I agreed with her, not knowing where she was going with this.
"Well doesn't Sammy and Sam sound the same way?" Lily asked me, "Leo, we found the missing kid. Now all we have to do is bring him back."
"Yeah, except we're lost too," I told her, "And now instead of one there are three missing children."
"Isn't this so freeky?" Sam asked.
"What?" Lily asked, "The way that you just screamed our names and nearly scarred our pants off?"
"No the fact that we can talk to each other under water." He said. It was true. I hadn't really noticed it, but we had been under the water for at least ten minutes, having normal conversations, without even a breath of air.
"That is kind of we weird," Lily said, "We should probably put a move on though. If we don't get out of here soon, we're going to be in the ocean during night time which is probably really dangerous."
As we began to swim the opposite direction that we had been, Sam looked over at Lily and asked her, "You don't recognize me at all?"
"Not really," Lily answered.
"You probably don't, because you were with Miranda the whole time, but we went to camp together." Sam told her.
I saw a look of recognition spread across Lily's face. "I remember that," She answered, "You and I were in a camp swim race and tied for first. After that my cabin was so mad at me that I didn't go one second faster."
"My cabin was mad too." Sam told her, "We would have won the swimming contest if I was just a tiny bit faster."
"Hey Lily," I asked, "Do you still have that weird book? We should probably show it to Sam."
"Oh, yeah." Lily told me, and then looked at her hand, "Wait, no I don't. I must've dropped it when I was getting you untangled from that seaweed clump"
"While I guess we will never know who was right," I told her.
Suddenly, Sam screamed. I looked over at Lily, and she screamed too. Then, moments later something pulled on my feet and everything went black.
