Chapter 36

At the end of the night, I saw Ginny try to get to me for questioning, but Harry pulled her away to lead her to the Gryffindor common room. As everyone left to their common room as well, I followed the Doctor to his office. I sat in my usual seat as he placed a bunch of papers and things into a box. It was quiet, but a peaceful quiet as we both just smiled at each other from time to time. It was a little past 3am and my eyelids were getting heavier and heavier. I had gone through so much mental exhaustion in one night. A had completely fell asleep while he was in his bedroom when Professor Noble opened the door, waking me up.

"Doctor, you there?" she asked before seeing me on the chair. "Oh, hello, Miss Granger," she beamed.

So she knew about his real identity? I thought back to the night I stormed into this very office, calling the Doctor John in front of Noble and she never asked any questions about it.

The Doctor walked back into the office and smiled at Noble.

"Donna! You should go pack, we're leaving now," he announced to her.

I looked confused at him. She was leaving with him? I was too tired to speak, but he looked down at me and understood what was making me frown.

"Donna Noble isn't a witch either. Forgot to tell you. She isn't a Timelord either, she's a simply Muggle. She my companion and has been travelling with me for a while now," he explained.

"Well, Doctor, that's what I'm here to talk to you about actually. I think... I think I love to teach! Defence Against the Dark Arts that is. Though I can't cast any actual spells myself, I love it! So, what I'm trying to say is that-"

"You want to stay," he cut her off, but didn't look mad or disappointed one bit.

"Yes," she smiled.

"That's fine, Donna. Oh, here keep this, it'll come in handy," he said, taking out his metal wand and throwing it to her.

"Your sonic screwdriver?" she gasped happily.

"I've got more," he shrugged.

"Thank you, Doctor," she said and pulled him into a tight embrace. "I'll miss you."

"Same here," he said, holding her back.

They let go of each other and, with her eyes watering a bit, she said goodbye to the Doctor and so did he. Finally, she left the office, waving her hand one last time to her friend. I watched the scene from where I was, my head heavily resting against the wooden back of the chair.

"I need to get you to bed," he grinned.

And before I knew it, he picked me up into his arms and carried me out the room, bridle style. I was scared a little as we went down the stairs, but he held me firmly close to his chest where I kept my eyes closed, falling deeper asleep. A second later, I found myself in front of the Gryffindor common entrance where the fat Lady was looking at the Doctor sternly.

"Who are you to touch a student? Never in all of my years at this school have I seen anything like this!" she exclaimed angrily.

"Oh shut up," I muttered. "Doctor, when will you come back?"

"I don't know... maybe tomorrow, maybe in a week. But you can trust that I will be back to get you, no matter what, Hermione," he said softly and placed me back on the ground. "Go to bed, I'll see you soon."

He kissed me on the top of the forehead and walked away to leave the castle. I vaguely muttered the password, walked across the common room and went up to the girl's dormitory to finally sleep. But Ginny was sitting there, waiting for me.

"Hermione! What the bloody Hell? You and John? Are you mad? You lost the man his job!! And what about Ron? Did you cheat on him? And you told me you'd talk to me if there was something! I can't believe you lied to me!" she ranted to the annoyance of the others and to me.

"Just go to sleep, Ginny," I said and let myself fall onto my bed to almost immediately fall back to sleep.
