I turn over in bed and reach over to the night stand and turned off the alarm. I have a long big stretch before getting out of bed and getting ready for work. I work in the Central Intelligence Unit for the Chicago police department. I served in the U.S. Army for awhile and thanks to my friend Antonio Dawson for bringing me in to work with him and his team.
I start to get ready by throwing on some jeans and a blue flannel. I style my hair by brushing and slicking it back and to the side. I put on some cologne and then head out to the kitchen. I grab a bowl and make myself a bowl of cereal. Once I finished, I grabbed my belt and headed out. While on my way to work, I get a phone call from my boss Hank Voight.
"Hey, what's up boss?" I said
"Halstead where are you?" said Voight
"I'm on my way, there's just a bit traffic"
"Well hurry up, the new intern will be here any time now"
I hang up and continue to cruise along through this traffic. I know there's a new intern coming but Voight never told us her name. I'm curious to find out who she is. Hopefully she cooperates unlike the pass interns we had.
-15 minutes later-
I finally arrive to work after being stuck in traffic. Voight's going to kill me. I grab my belt and head inside. There stood Sergeant Platt at the front desk.
"Hank is so gonna be on you" she said
"Let's not talk about it" I said before punching in and heading up to the unit
Once I got up, everyone stares at me.
"You're late" said Antonio
"Yeah I know, where's Erin and Voight?" I asked
"Their in Voight's office talking to the intern" said Olinsky
"I think you'll like her" said Antonio before giving me a wink
Voight's office door opens and out comes Erin
"Well look who showed up" she said
"Yeah yeah. Now where's the intern" I said rolling my eyes
"She's right here. Jay meet Valerie. Valerie meet Jay" said Voight
I looked over and there stood the new intern who happens to be my ex.

"Am I at the right office? There has to be a mistake" said Valerie
"You're at the right place" said Antonio giving me the "I told ya" look
"Voight, I can't work with her" I said
"Why not?" said Voight
"Um..." I said hesistantly
"It's cause we're exes" said Val rolling her eyes
"Well, you're going to get along cause you're the best intern I've interviewed so far and I'm looking forward to keeping you here" said Voight
"Well then I look forward to working with you Valerie" I said holding out my hand
She takes my hand and grips it tightly giving me a slight smile. I know there's still a connection between us. I'm gonna do whatever it takes to win her back.
"Well Valerie, I think we'll get along real well" said Erin shaking Val's hand
"I look forward to it" said Valerie while glaring at me

Valerie's POV
I honestly didn't know Jay was back. Last time I saw him was when I found him in our bed with some chick. I'm still pissed til this day and now I'm gonna work with him. All he has to do is stay out of my way and not come near me.
As I finish my rounds greeting and meeting everyone in the unit, I grab all of my paperwork and started to head out. My shift doesn't start until next week so I got some time to myself before I have to work with the one person I hate the most. As I left the unit, I heard Jay call after me. I rush down to the stairs and without looking, I bump into a young woman with brown hair up in a ponytail.
"Oh my god, I am so sorry!" I apologized
"Oh hey no problem. You're the new intern for the Intelligence Unit right?" she asked
"Yes I am. I'm Valerie" I said holding out my hand
"I'm Kim Burgess. It's nice to finally meet you" she said shaking my hand
"You too" I said smiling
"Well I'm gonna head up now and I'll see you soon. And nice outfit by the way. And hey Jay" she said before heading up to the unit

"Thanks" I said before turning around and being face to face with Jay
"Can I have a word with you in there please" he said pointing to an empty room just across from the front desk
"Whatever you have to say, you can say it right here" I said
Jay lets out a big sigh before grabbing my arm and dragging me into the room and closing the door behind him.
