The ancient water creature sat at the bottom of a lake seventy miles from Hovdala, Sweden. He was quietly tuning his fiddle while thinking of what new tune to play when he felt something disturb the water. He looked up un-crossed his legs and kicked up from the floor, he stuck only half of his head up enough to see what the cause was. After awhile of him turning in the water he finally spotted what he guess was the source of the disturbance. There was a young woman probably no younger than twenty, she was standing by an old fishing cabin and was tossing stones into the lake. The woman had on a white button up and white skirt. She seemed upset and do to how filthy she was he figured she was a drifter. She had elbow length chocolate brown hair, pale skin, and had scars on basically every part of her body he could see. What happened to her? Will trouble find it's way here? He continued to watch her and until she grabbed some bags from behind her and went into the cabin. He just floated in the water wondering if she would come out. When she never did after about thirty minutes he decided to go back under the lake.
The next day he surfaced and found that the girl was still there. He wondered how long she's been alone and if she had any injuries at all. He never thought these things about humans or even other creatures. Sure, he had relations with women in the past but he just did it out of lust or to make the woman happy. Fossegrim felt as if this was what the humans would call "the one". He didn't even know this person and these feelings were rather annoying and strange to him. It wasn't even a month and he felt for her. Despite this he continued to watch as the woman knelt by the small outstretched bank and started writing something in the sediment, he couldn't tell what was being written only that he could feel some kind of pure energy flow from the bank to the water. Is this woman a witch he wondered. He decided to go back under the water after she started to draw more things that began to make him feel more uncomfortable each thing she drew sent out a different feeling; he felt as if he may be in danger. When he went all the way to the lake floor and when he started swimming out from the cabin he could still feel the varying energies but not as intense as previously, so he thought that if he swam further away the less he could feel, with this theory he decided to swim away to his favorite spot in the lake: an underwater cavern.
Turned out he was right, he could only feel a slight whisper of the feelings as he approached the entrance of the cave. He got out of the water halfway and held out his hand and his fiddle and bow appeared he brushed his black hair out of his face with his hand and started to play. He sometimes missed having his brother Näcken around but, he drove him out when he realized that all he wanted to do is drown people and harass them. He tried to tell him that he could learn from humanity, but his dear brother wasn't interested in making friends with mortals like he was. Then the reality came to him that he had been alone for all of these centuries, he smiled at himself mainly because he had a much happier life without having to compete for everything and having to deal with the after effects of saving a potential victim. Which reminded him of his last student:
Haustmánudur (October) 9th, 890
It was early in the morning and Fossegrim was sitting on a rock waist deep in water playing his fiddle slowly moving side to side with the song. He heard something moving from behind him in the forest when he turned he saw a small child that probably hadn't hit his sixth year peeking out from behind a tree at the edge of the woods. The child walked closer to him and was now out of the woods. He pulled out something wrapped in linen and handed it to the fiddler. Fossegrim realized it was a hunk of meat which meant that the boy wanted him to teach the fiddle. He patted a log next to him and the boy uneasily approached him. He asked the boy if he had a fiddle and the child shook his head no. 'Very well' he thought. Fossegrim handed the child his fiddle and the boy held it like his teacher did. He smiled at the boy because of how cute he looked with the instrument as big as he was and he was the first human to ever hold his fiddle. He began to teach the boy by first guiding the child by putting his fingers and hands in position on it and then instructed him on what angle to hold his hand with the bow. It went on like this for a few hours and the boy could roughly play the fiddle. The child smiled at Fossegrim and he smiled back and said words of encouragement that made the child smile more. After two more hours the sun started to set and Fossegrim told the child which name he found out was Lukas that he might want to go home before the trolls or Jotan started to prowl. Lukas said his thanks and went to leave when Fossegrim realized that a few Nøkken were watching them the entire time. He saw a hand reach from the water and grabbed the child's right ankle and tried to drag him into the water when Fossegrim grabbed the child and kicked the offender in the face. His younger brother hissed and sank under the water. The child was clearly horrified and hung on to Fossegrim's neck. He carried Lukas back to the forest's edge and sat him down. Lukas bowed respectfully.
"Tack så mychet herrn," Lukas thanked him. "Varsågod, var försiktig," Fossegrim welcomed. With that Lukas ran on his way back to his village.Back in the present:
He grimaced as he remembered how all the Näcken and him got into an argument and he pounced on him once he went back into the water. Then smiled as he remembered beating him. He looked around his cavern and was still so happy he had the place to himself. He took his legs out of the water and made his instrument disappear as he made his way to where he slept. As he laid down on the sand patch he thought about the woman and thought about if he had enough courage to learn more about her.
To be continued.
