“Hey, are you even listening to me?” my best friend Jasmine said, narrowing her eyes at me.
My mind refocused once she called out to me.
I blinked a few times in response, trying to recall what she just told me but not surprisingly, I thought of nothing.Shifting the hand supporting the side of my head while I drifted into a daydream, I acted awake and “totally listening”.
“I was but --”
“But you turned off afterwards, hmm?” Jasmine interrupted, raising an eyebrow.
I sighed in defeat. It was hard to defend against her sharp observation skills. No point denying when she already knows.
“What were you talking about?” I replied glumly, reluctant that I was going to hear her talk about our school gossip AGAIN (which was the reason why I drifted off).
Luckily, she spared me by continuing on where she left off. Although she did seem slightly annoyed that I seem uninterested, she knew I had worked through the night to complete the assignment from yesterday and lacked sleep.
“So, there’s this new guy who will be joining our class AND HE’S HOT,” Jasmine’s voice ended on a high-pitch squeal at the end, making me wince slightly because of the sound. And the distance.
“Chill, Jas. You’re overreacting.”
Being a kpop fan for over a year, I am used to judging guys based on my high standards, comparing them to real hotties like vernon from seventeen and rowon from sf9. It is not surprising if I end up being single for the rest of my life, but who cares when you stan kpop groups right??
“I’m not kidding. He’ll definitely meet your ridiculously high standards.”
“Really…” I answered with a bored voice. It was my turn to narrow my eyes and raise an eyebrow.
Jasmine is into kpop too, but she is not as crazy as me when it comes to fangirling. Actually, she is super calm and currently has a boyfriend.
If you’re wondering how we ended up being friends in the first place, I have no answer to that. All I know was that I met her in a vlive chatroom of a video promoting a charity event during the christmas season a year ago, and that we played tap races while trying to reach the goal of 100 million hearts for the event. We were not close then, but we met up again in twitter not long after.
It was quite laughable that we soon realised that we were of the same age, same school, and same class this year. It took me some time before I actually believed it too.
The school bell rung twice to signal the start of the first period and with that Jasmine stood up from the seat in front of me and moved to the other end of the classroom, where her seat was.
I opened my bag to take out the materials needed for today’s lesson, busying myself with details of the last tutorial before the teacher enters.-------------
“We have a new transfer student who will be joining us for this month. He’s from korea so please don’t make fun of his english and don’t just sit there -- help him,” Mr Wong announced before gesturing to the new student to come into the classroom.
Following my classmates’ gazes with a yawn, I tried hard to focus on the new student with a bored expression. Well, he was definitely taller than most of the boys here, but I could not really focus on his face due to my sleepy vision. With the perception that he is just another typically student, I felt myself drift slowly to sleep. *insert lullaby music here*
“Y/N!” Mr Wong called from the front, jolting me awake.
“Yes… sir??” I replied with a weak smile, hoping he did not catch me dozing off.
I forgot to mention that he has a nickname: ‘boogeyman’. His students cannot sleep peacefully in his classes without him ‘haunting’ their naps, hence the name.
Mr Wong may take discipline pretty seriously, but a lot of students still respect him because he cares for his students and talk to them as if they are his friends. He does make sarcastic or comments targeting certain students sometimes, but they are not in a very criticising manner so we just laugh along.
“I hope you are not traveling to lala land. I’ll put you in charge of guiding him along so take care of him for me,” he instructed, patting the new student on the back.
This time I had the chance to look at the guy next to Mr Wong more closely now that i’m awake.
And true enough, Jasmine was right. He is hot.
