It was New Years Eve and Jake, my boyfriend of two years, invited me over to his family's New Year's Eve party. I loved his family they were always so nice and made me feel welcomed. I arrived at the house in a black dress in high heels, I knocked on the door and Ryan, Jake's younger brother opened the door.
" Hey Jessica, Jake's downstairs" he said walking away from the door and to the basement. The adults were on the first floor drinking and finishing up a dinner they were having. I walked down to the basement with Ryan. The basement was huge with a big couch and kitchen with a bar. "Jake, Jess is here!" Ryan yelled walking into the room.
" Hey!" He said giving me a kiss on the check.
"Hey! Where is Elle and Max? I saw Brooke upstairs." Brooke was Jake's older sister she was 21. She had twin babies, Elle and Max.
" Sleeping upstairs" he answered. There were about 15 teenagers in the basement along with Ryan who was 14. Jake's little sister Macy was at a friends. Besides cousins most of the people in the basement were family friends. We watched a movie and played video games. Soon enough it was midnight and we counted down.
"5...4...3...2...1! Happy New Year!" Jake and I kissed along with a number of couples in the room. The night was winding down an hour later and only a Jake, Ryan and I were in the basement. Ryan was passed out on the couch. Jake and I started making out along with some other things. Soon we made our way into the guest bedroom in the basement. The clothes came off and he asked,
"Are you sure you wanna do this?"
"Yes," I answered pulling him back to kiss me. This was my first time along with his.
"Should I go get a condom?"
" I'm on the pill, we don't need one." Thinking back if we used one I wouldn't be here. I had strep throat two weeks earlier and was still taking antibiotics and wasn't thinking they could affect my birth control pill. I woke up the next morning naked in a bed with Jake next to me. I got dressed in my clothes from the night before. It was early and he wasn't up yet. My parents probably didn't notice that I didn't come home last night but they would once they woke up. I quietly left his house, got in my car and drive home. No one was awake when I got home, so I quietly snuck up stairs, put on pjs and took off my already smeared makeup. That night faded into memory until now.
*A month later*
It was a cold Tuesday morning in February. I woke up and got dressed. My boobs felt weird I hoped it was a sign my period was coming, it was a week late. I was in Mr. Runner's AP History class when I felt like I was about to vomit. My hand shot up quickly.
" Yes Jessica?" He asked" May I go to the bathroom?" He nodded. I grabbed my bag and ran to the bathroom but threw up in thrash can. I walked to the nurse office. " Excuse me, I don't feel very well."
"You don't look sick," she said as I was faking it. I turned to leave and threw up on the floor. "Come lie down sweetie let me take your temperature, you don't have a fever, it looks like the flu. Let me call your mom what's your name dear?"
"Jessica Collins."
"You're a senior?"
" Yes, my car is here can I drive myself home?"
"Sure hun!" She said handing me a slip saying I could leave. "Take some Tylenol or Advil." I was driving down the road of our small, Oceanside town in Connecticut. I passed Wally's a local drugstore in town. I decided to go in and buy some Tylenol, we didn't keep a lot of medicine in the house. I walked in and the little bell above the door rang. A big display with red heart that contained chocolate for Valentine's day that was coming up soon was in the front. I walked down the aisle for medicine and stopped at the Tylenol. I overhead the pharmacist talking to a costumer about her antibiotics.
"Like most antibiotics this will cause birth control to be defective so use condoms as a substitute." That made me think. I was on antibiotics and the pill when Jake and I had sex and we didn't use a condom. I walked to an aisle next to the one I was in. I walked past the pads, tampons, and condoms and right next to the condoms were the pregnancy tests. Ironic. I picked up three of the cheapest one. 1$ each. I went to the cash register to pay.
"3.50" the middle aged woman said putting the tests in the bag. I felt so judged and I probably was. I was 17, buying pregnancy tests. I payed.
"Do you guys have a bathroom available?"
"In the back to the right." I walked to the back of the store and went into the bathroom. I opened the pink packaging. A little cup fell out, then a dropper, and a little pink toy looking test. I peed in the cup then used to the dropper for the test. I read the instructions, " wait two minutes for accurate results." I waited two minutes, my timer went off on my phone. I looked at the test sitting on the the toilet paper holder. Two lines pregnant, one line not pregnant. A faint second line appeared. Maybe it was just my eyes I couldn't be pregnant. I used the other two tests to confirm what was going on. Was I pregnant. The same thing happened with both of the other tests. A faint second line. I threw the tests in my bag and bought a different test. Clear blue. It would tell straight out if i was pregnant or not. I payed and left the store. I went home and my mom was home from work.
"Hey honey!" She said from the couch.
" Mom what are you doing home?"
"The school called saying you had the flu and everything was handled at the store so I came home to see if you need anything."
"Thanks mom. I'm really tired I think I'm just going to go upstairs."
"Ok honey!" I lied in bed wishing and hoping this was the flu. I couldn't be pregnant I couldn't. I had my whole life ahead of me. I was going to Michigan with an academic scholarship, I was the top of my class and here I was making a mistake that could ruin my life. I was so stupid and hated my self for it. I rummaged through my drawers to find the antibiotic instructions. It read," makes hormonal birth control defective" how did I not know that. A couple hours later I took the clear blue test. My phone timer went off and I had to face my biggest fear. Was I pregnant? Then the word flashed before my eyes. Pregnant. What was I gonna do? I was in shock. All I could do was cry. Just cry and cry. I hid the test in my bag and just cried. I was pregnant.
