Chapter 28: New Life

October 14th, 2020

Melody and Levin were trimming and weeding in her front yard. They laughed and chatted as they continued. It'd began to get chilly, and the plants would need to be trimmed before the frost. Levin had offered to help her after school.

"It's quite the beautiful Wendsday, isn't it?" Levin smiled at her.

She giggled. "Quite." She hummed cheerfully. A few minutes later, she got a phone call, and she tensed. "O-Okay! I'll head over!" She hung up.

"What is it?"

"Mom's having Asher!" She said hurriedly. "I'm sorry, but I have to go, thank you for the help, Levin!" She quickly brushed herself off and kissed Levin's cheek before grabbing her bike from the garage. Levin waved at her as she sped off towards the hospital.

She drove her bike as fast as possible, careful to dodge people and cars. Her heart was racing with adrenaline and excitement. Asher was almost here. A baby brother, another person to share her life with.

She arrived swiftly to the hospital. She parked her bike and locked it up before jogging inside, red faced and breathless. She sped-walked to the maturity ward and walked up to the desk. "Excuse me, do you know where Aphmau Ro'Meave is? I'm family."

A nurse smiled. "Yeah, she was just brought into  birthing room. You'll need to wait here, though."

"Oh, okay. Thank you." She gave them a thankful smile and plopped down in a chair, trying to smooth out her breathing.

He smiled. "It's going to be a few hours."

"I know." She smiled. "I'm just, so excited!"

He chuckled. "New lives are always exciting."

She smiled. "Is that why you work in this ward?"

"It is, actually." He smiled. "You're pretty bright."

She blushed humbly. "I-I'm just using context clues."

"It's a very useful tool." He smiled. "Have a good day, miss." He said as he left to check on some of his patients.

The next five hours were torturous and slow. She walked around the hospital, looked through the gift shop, and read her e-book on her phone. She looked up when Zane came out of a nearby door. She stood up in anticipation. He looked over at her and gave her a smile.

"Come on in, Mel."

She hurried over and entered the room with Zane, and went over to Aphmau's side. Aph smiled at her softly, holding Asher in a bundle. Melody gasped quietly.

"He's so adorable." She whispered, as if speaking any louder would break him.

"Would you like to hold him?"

"Can I?" Melody asked, her eyes basically stars with excitement.

"Of course." She chuckled.

Carefully, Melody took Asher into her arms, one hand supporting his bottom and his head. He stayed completely calm in her arms. She smiled softly.

"Hey, Asher, I'm your big sister, Melody. I'll protect you." She kissed his forehead, which caused him to coo excitedly. She giggled.

She played peek-a-boo and pat-a-cake with him, until he wanted to go to Zane, as Aphmau was sleeping. Melody was ecstatic. Soon, Zianna, Sylvana, Garret, Vylad, and Garroth showed up, each taking a turn to fawn over the newborn. Asher was definitely going to be raised well.
