IT WAS THE FIRST TIME HE SAW HER - that he decided he loved her. Maybe it was the way her chapped lips would always find their way into a smile, the way her hands had rested ever so gently on his shoulders and waist when they had hugged a respectful goodbye, or her voice sounding like angels singing in heaven.
Her voice was his favorite. It was a sound he was already used to, having only heard it a handful of times, because it was something he'd replayed in his mind on days of endless thinking and on days of endless heartache.
It made him feel like he wouldn't ever have to feel heartache if she were to use her voice to softly whisper, I love you to him at times when he couldn't even love himself.
But for now, without her gentle voice and her endless smiles, he would have to deal with the fact that she would never love him back and he had to convince himself that it was almost okay because if not her loving him, then someone even more beautiful.
