Above: Lamman Rucker as Tom Nelson
Julie Anne
Around 6 I climb down the stairs to find the kitchen. Josh left a couple hours ago promising he would be back tomorrow to drop off my stuff. I am still very confused on why he is helping me. It makes me wonder if he is doing this just to get rid of his feelings or if he really cares for my safety. Who knows. After 5 minutes of searching I finally find the kitchen and I come face to face with Tom.
"Ah, hey Julie Anne. How are you doing so far?"
"I am doing alright, still a little confused and shocked just looking for something to eat." I state looking toward the floor.
"Julie Anne, look at me." Tom says lifting my chin to make my eyes meet his. "You do not have to look down anymore when you talk. You can look at me and talk to me. Okay?" He says, searching for something in my eyes.
"Okay." I says.
"Now lets get you a spot at the table to join us for dinner." He says grabbing my hand to force me to follow. We pass under an archway to find a large table in the middle of the room. Many people surround it lightly chatting and eating their food. I stop.
"Tom? I can't eat at the table I am not allowed to. Please let me just grab my food and eat in my room." I stammer my legs shaking softly.
"Oh no Julie Anne, we all want you to eat with us. You don't have to talk but you are eating at the table." He smiles. He starts to pull my along toward two empty chairs. He pulls the chair out gesturing for me to sit. I stare, shaking so bad. I haven't sat at a dinning room table since my mom's funeral. Taking hesitant steps, I sit down and Tom sits next to me. Food is placed in front of us and my jaw hits the floor. A steak is sitting in front of me.
"Tom you have this wrong I am supposed to get soup tonight. It is Tuesday. I always have soup."
"Julie Anne, you're are not there anymore. You are free to do what you want when you want and how you want. You don't have a set dinner menu. Please eat and enjoy your dinner." He reassures me with a touch of his hand to my shoulder.
"But-"
"No buts. Dig in." Those are his last words before he starts to dig in himself. I turn to look at the steak. A shaky hand reaches for my knife and fork. Slicing a piece off of the meat, I smell the sweet, mouth watering aroma of the food. I place the meat in my mouth and chew and all my problems melt away. Word can't even describe this steak. I hurry and take another slice not wanting this to slip away. I don't want to wake up in that basement and not have another bit of this steak. I reach down to my leg and pinch myself just to make sure I am not dreaming. Nothing happens, so I smile and devour my food.
When I am finished, I turn to see Tom smiling down on me.
"Enjoy it?" He asks delight in his voice.
"Yes actually I did. It was amazing thank you." I thank him.
"Don't thank me I don't cook, thank all the girls at this table they love to do the cooking." He says presenting all the beautiful women at the table.
He leans down to my ear. "Just a secret between me and you, they won't let the men in the kitchen." He says laughing to himself. After a long awkward silence I decide to go back to my room.
"Well thank you for everything Tom, I am going to go to bed now." I state pushing my chair back and standing.
"You are welcome Julie Anne. I will see you in the morning." He waves me good bye as I walk toward the stairs.
I reach my door and slip quietly into it locking the door behind me. I tip toe over to the balcony and sit in the chair. The moon slowly but surely rises in the night sky, the clouds cover bits and pieces. The fireflies dance along the grass and I hear the faint noise of a waterfall. Whoever from above decided to give me a second chance I will forever own them my thanks because this is so wonderful and nothing I could ever dream of happening to me.
I hear footsteps and voice coming toward my room I jolt up and sneak into the dark corner of my room. The shadow outside of my door stops and a knock comes seconds later. I slowly walk toward the door and unlock it, heart bounding. Opening the door, I see Josh standing outside of it.
"Hey." He says holding three boxes with 4 more behind him.
"What are you doing here?" I ask shocked that he is here again.
"Funny that you ask but when I got home my dad wasn't there so I quickly got your stuff." He states looking down at the boxes.
"Well thank you." I bow my head and open the door wider. He walks in and puts the three boxes in the closet. I grab a box and place it by my bed.
"Those three are all of your clothes and shoes and these four are all you belongings plus the jewelry box." He says with a small smile on his face.
"Thank you for everything Josh." I shyly whisper.
"You're welcome Julie Anne." He laughs walking toward the door.
"Good night Josh." I wave good bye while closing the door.
"Good night Julie Anne."
I close the door and turn toward the boxes. I walk towards one and open it. I start to unpack and by the time I am done the room feels more like home than that basement ever did. I lay flat on the bed staring at the ceiling thinking of my mom and the new life that I can start.
"Mom? Are you listening?" I ask quietly to the empty room. I feel a breeze on my arm and smile.
"Hey mom. Guess you followed me? Isn't this nice? I'm finally away from my prison. Plus the people here are nice. I am so glad that I am here." I whisper toward the wall I felt the breeze from.
"Mom? Do you blame yourself for what has happened to me?" I ask.
A warm breeze crosses over my face. Damn, I knew she would.
"Please don't. It isn't your fault he made you happy. I am strong mom because of you. I can imagine this move is also because of you. I want you to know that I love you and I miss you so much. I dream of the day I will wake up and you will be standing there." I say staring at the corner I know she would stand.
"I can feel your hands, hugs, kisses and sometimes I think I even hear you." I whisper a single tear rolling down my face.
"I miss you." With that I fall asleep with the feeling of my mother's arms around me.
