After my mom was drug away by the cops I went back to my room to get ready for my date. Everett promised he would take me out somewhere, on a real date. He didn't say where we were going. I was getting ready when I saw a girl behind me in my mirror, I turned around and gasped.
"I want you to make me a pretty girl, Hazel."
I recognized the girl as Adelaide who lived next door.
"Addie you can't keep coming in our house like this!"
She giggled and then said, "I want to be a pretty girl, Hazel!"
"Alright fine Addie but you can't break in here anymore, okay?"
"Okay."
I had her sit down while I ruffled around for some makeup. I pulled out some red lipstick and blue eyeshadow,
"This will do."
Addie clapped her hands and looked at me gleefully.
"Hold still," I said while painting her lids blue.
She squeezed her eyes shut tight. I began to work my little talent at makeup. Then I painted her lips ruby red and turned her around to face the mirror.
"Oh Hazel! I look so pretty, thank you!"
I smiled at her in the mirror. Then she turned around to face me,
"Everett likes you, I can tell. He thinks your a pretty girl."
"You know Everett?"
"Yes, he told me about you."
"Oh, well I have to get ready."
"Okay."
She got up and left the house laughing. I shut my door and changed out of my grubby clothes and into some nicer ones. I was now wearing and expensive cardigan straight from France with a purple shirt and leggings. I pushed my hair back into a ponytail but then put it back down again. It was almost midnight. I ran downstairs where Everett was standing. His hands were behind his back and he looked curious. I approached him. He pulled a single rose from behind his back,
"It's a flower. I painted it black, I know you don't like normal things."
"Thank you, this is the first time a boy has given me a flower."
He blushed, "Are you ready for our date?"
"Yes, where are we going?"
"I'll show you."
He took my hand and we walked to the location.
He guided me to a beach, a bonfire was already going and he had laid blankets down for us to lay on. The waves splashed against each other and the moon's reflection cast over the scene.
"It's great, isn't it?"
"Yeah it is, why'd you bring me here?"
"It was my favorite place to go when everything else was going wrong. My escape."
We sat down on the blankets and watched the waves. Everett kissed the nape of my neck playfully and I giggled.
"Stop it!" I laughed.
He smirked at me and wrestled me to the ground. I laughed harder and then he stopped and started laughing too. We looked at the stars while catching our breath. Then he rolled on top of me and started to kiss me again,I gave in. After a minute I grabbed his crotch,
"I want you."
He pulled away,
"No, not yet."
He sat up and stared into the ocean.
"I'm sorry I just thought.."
"Hazel, I swear I want to be with you so badly. That's never happened to me.. with a girl."
"What? Are you.. Are you gay?"
"What, no!"
"Then what is it?"
"Maybe it's those meds your dad gave me, they do that."
I got up and started to walk away,
"I'm going to go."
"No, no, no, Hazel. I'm not ready to go yet."
He grabbed my wrist and looked into my eyes. I sat back down next to him.
"I used to come here... when the world closed in and got so small I couldn't breathe. I'd look out at the ocean, and I'd think... "Yo, douche bag, high school counts for jack shit." Kurt Cobain, Quentin Tarantino, Brando, De Niro, Pacino... all high school dropouts. I... hated high school. So I'd come here and I'd look out at this vast, limitless expanse. Then it's like, that's your life, man. You can do anything, be anything. Screw high school. That's... It's just a blip in your timeline. Don't get stuck there."
I was resting my head on his shoulder, half asleep. I heard a twig snap and bolted upward.
"There's someone here."
I looked around and saw a group of girls and boys, they looked about 17. They were dressed in school clothing with blood all over it.
They approached us. I joked,
"Nice costumes what are you supposed to be the dead breakfast club?"
Everett piped up nervously,
"There's a whole lot of beach here, guys."
"Good job, Everett. You finally came out of hiding." one of the kids said.
"We've been waiting years for you to show your face." the jock in the group said.
"You like mommy's little safe house though, don't you?" another one said.
"I don't know you," Everett said.
"I'm surprised you would have the balls to show up here."
"Yeah, would've thought you'd wear a mask."
"I'm not that into Halloween." Everett replied.
"This year's different though, you have a date, how cute." The goth girl laughed.
"Leave her alone." Everett said getting protective.
"We don't want her, we want you."
"How about we drown him?"
"No, we should shoot him right between the eyes."
"Ha, ha, Halloween pranks." I said while rolling my eyes.
"Somebody please waste this bitch." said the goth girl.
"Yeah, why does he get a girlfriend? I don't have a girlfriend. Do you have a girlfriend? Kyle, you?"
"Nope. I haven't had sex in a long time."
"Come on, let's go. This beach sucks. Someone should pick up the trash," Everett said while pulling my hand away.
