Chapter 12
*Tarynn's POV*
"Father?" I choked out.
At no point in time had I expected Damien's father to be the President of our country. I could clearly recall the face of our nation's leader from newspapers and on the tv screen. Given, he did have jet black hair like Damien. However, the other features were only faintly similar and it didn't occur to me that they were father and son.
"Class, please rise to greet our President."
The rather excited voice of Mrs. Traven echoed throughout the classroom and all of us got off our seats as the President walked in with 2 bodyguards in tow.
He gave us a smile as we bowed and greeted him. It was a simple, curt smile - one of authority and power. Many of us were looking very eager to converse with the President while some were looking bored and uninterested. As for myself, I wanted to ask him whether or not Damien was his son. I wanted to but it seemed crude and so, I thought against it. After all, if Damien was really his son, he would acknowledge him.
I then remembered what Zoey had been trying to tell me earlier in the day. She had mentioned that the President's child studied in the school. However, her words were cut off by the ringing of the school bell. So, it wasn't impossible for Damien to be the son of the President.
"Are you having doubts about me?" asked Damien.
"Why would I be?"
"I know the look on your face. You're choosing between believing me and not believing me. Well, what's the verdict?" he asked as he casually swung a loose piece of thread round his fingers.
"I don't know what you're saying," I said as I shuffled around in my seat.
Before Damien could say anything else, the class was suddenly in absolute silence as the President raised his hand. It looked like he wanted to say something to all of us.
"It's a pleasure to be back here at the prestigious Alfalon Institution. It brings me great joy to see your young and eager smiling faces looking back at me, assuring me of the fact that this nation's future would be safe in the hands of bright children like you in time to come. Today, I have come to inform all of you of a new scholarship scheme that the government has come up with. It is known as the George Poleer Scholarship Award for Scientific Excellence, which is the GPSASC in short. As most of you may know, George Poleer has been a prominent figure in our country for many decades for being a brilliant scientist and researcher. In order to acknowledge him for his profound work in the industry of neurology, we want to introduce this new scholarship scheme to all the aspiring scientists out there. With the GPSASC, your school fees will be fully subsidized and you will also be given the amazing opportunity to go to South Korea, where you will be researching alongside notable scientists for 5 months. So, I hope that you will consider this scholarship scheme seriously and if you're chosen, your exciting journey to scientific supremacy will await you. Thank you."
As soon as he had completed his speech, the class clapped their hands loudly before engaging in a bustling discussions. It was indeed an interesting experience for someone who aspired to be a scientist.
"I could help you win this scholarship if you wanted."
My eyes flashed angrily at Damien as he said that. "I'm not that unscrupulous a person! How dare you say that to me?"
His dark eyes shimmered and a small smirk crept up his face. "You'll never know when you'll need my help, Mathire. I'm his son after all and power is what I possess. If I were you, I wouldn't speak to me in such a manner."
