Basically, the government releases these parasites as they are trying to prove their importance. And then the whole plan goes to shit because of course, it does. The parasite can infect you, enter your body, and turn you into a hungry demon parasite.
Now Lee and Samuel are English outsiders. Lee being a scientist, and Samuel is a writer for Lee's experiments.
The whole Ham squad are simple outsiders. :/ Each of their roles is explained within the text so I suggest you should read it.
