Ellen woke with a start. It was pitch black. For a moment, she couldn't remember anything that happened the day before. She yawned and winced as pain shot through her head. Suddenly all the memories of what happened hit her like a train. Terror filled her and she tried to sit up, but a piercing pain in her chest forced her to lie back down.

For a couple of minutes she lay in the dark, waiting for her father to come barging in. But as her eyes adjusted to the room, she realized she wasn't in her bedroom. This wasn't her house.

A throbbing pain in her head interrupted her thoughts. She reached her hand up to her head and touched it gently. There was a bandage wrapped around it. A bandage? Her father never tended to her wounds.

Ellen wanted to find out where she was, but her injuries and drowsiness wouldn't let her. She would have to find out where she was in the morning.

As she drifted off against her will, Ellen felt nervous. What if someone came while she slept? What if they hurt her? An image of her dad, throwing her across the room flashed through her mind. Maybe falling asleep wouldn't be the worst thing in the world.

-------------------

When Ellen came back into consciousness, the room was lit. She could hear people talking outside her room, and a steady beeping sound beside her... A hospital? Out of the corner of her eye, she spotted a heart monitor. Yep, definitely a hospital. Which means they found out about her father.

Ellen sighed and closed her eyes again, fighting back tears. She knew what was going to happen. People are going to come and ask her questions about her dad. Then they will ask her why she never told anyone before. Finally, they will send her off to an orphanage or a foster home, where she will be treated just as badly as she was treated, if not worse. Sounds like fun!

Of course, despite everything, she felt sort of relieved. Even if her life was going to suck, at least she can enjoy her time in the hospital. At last, she will get some peace and qui-

"HELLO THERE SWEETIE!" A blonde girl in pink scrubs burst into the room with a smile that was too big to be legal.

Ellen gasped and threw her arms in front of her face. It took her a second to realize it was just some girl. She put her arms back down, face burning with embarrassment.

If the girl noticed Ellen's reaction, she didn't say anything. Instead she checked Ellen's vitals while chattering loudly. "My name is Barbara, but you can call me Barbie! I'm going to be taking care of you these next few days. If you want anything, just ask and you shall receive. I'll be like your own personal servant! Anyways, I have to ask you a few questions. First of all, do you remember what happened?"

Ellen looked away and fiddled with her IV tube. "Yeah."

The nurse made a tut-tut noise with her mouth. "The nerve of some people. How are you feeling?"

"Like crap. Everything hurts."

"Not surprised. You have a broken nose, some head trauma, and we had to stitch up your back. He really did a number on you." The nurse paused for a moment, realizing what she just said. "Oh! Sorry! I didn't mean, uh, I-"

"It's fine, I understand." Ellen managed a weak smile.

"Um, well, anyway," The nurse cleared her throat before asking, " Apart from the pain, do you feel anything else?"

"Not really. Although I am a bit hungry." Ellen said. Her stomach growled as if to agree with her.

"Of course! I'll go get you some food." Barbara started to leave before turning back, saying, "One more thing... Do you feel up to any visitors?"

"No." Ellen said immediately. She wasn't about to let any social workers talk to her. She needed a break.

Barbara gave Ellen a small, sad smile. "I'll be right back with lunch."

-----------------

The rest of the day was enjoyable. Ellen got to relax, eat something other than peanut butter sandwiches, and read books that the nurse brought from the hospital library. It was one of the best days she had in a while.

It was nighttime again, and Nurse Barbara was chattering away as she replaced the bandages. Ellen was reading a book, and not really listening to her. That is, until a certain phrase caught her attention.

"...And I know you said no visitors, but this lady is completely safe and really sweet! Trust me, she couldn't hurt a fly. All she wants is to-"

"Wait, what?" Ellen interrupted, "Who's coming to see me?"

"Ms.Skeevy! She runs a type of foster home out in the country, and she would like you to live there! Isn't that wonderful?" The nurse smiled widely.

"I don't know..." Ellen said uncertainly. The idea of living in a foster home did not appeal to her. However, she knew she couldn't stay in the hospital forever. Ellen sighed, "I guess I'll talk to her,"

"Great!" The over energetic blonde finished wrapping Ellen's head, and stood up, saying, "Well, I'm going home for the night. Sleep well!"

"You too," Ellen said with a smile. The nurse gave a little wave before practically bouncing out of the room.

Ellen stayed up a bit longer to finish her book, then decided it was time to get some rest. She had an appointment tomorrow. She set her book to the side and laid down. She was asleep in seconds.

--------------------

She was in a dark room, so dark, she couldn't see a thing. Whispers and soft noises floated all around her. A young girl was sobbing in the distance.

Fear gripped Ellen's heart. She wasn't supposed to be here, not yet. She wanted out.

She reached into the air and grasped a door handle. She turned the knob slowly. The whispers got louder. The young girl began to scream. Ellen opened the door to reveal.... A pair of shockingly green eyes.

"Wha..." Ellen croaked. The eyes widened in surprise and pulled back. Ellen then realized she wasn't dreaming anymore.

She gasped and sat up in her bed quickly. The room was dark, but she could see that those green eyes were attached to a girl, who was now sitting on her bed and staring at her. She looked around the same age as Ellen, with short frizzy hair.

"Who are you?" Ellen asked incredulously, "What are you doing here? How did you get in?"

The girl blinked twice and smiled, before disappearing into thin air. Ellen stared at the spot where the intruder once sat.

"...what?"

Hello again! I hope you enjoyed this much less violent chapter. The next one won't be posted for a whole, though. There's still some character designs I need to finish.

Thanks for reading!
