Once I was over my little surprise, I reached inside the trunk with a shaking hand. I close my hand around the cool metal. I pull it out and stare at it.
It's a locket. Old and fading, but I can still make out the details here and there. Flowers and swirls. Hearts and Curly-Qs. As I run my hand over the cool metal I notice something else inside the trunk. I hadn't noticed it there before. I reach in again and grab it. A note.
I can recognize the handwriting, although I haven't seen it much for years. I begin to read the message as fear courses through me.
My Little Izzie,
I don't know when you will be reading this but knowing you, then I'm certain you will get this before your adulthood. I've known for a while now that I won't be here much longer and I just wanted a way for you to always remember me so I'm giving you this. If you open the locket, you'll find that inside there's a p-
I hear a strangled cry come from somewhere then I realize... it was from me. The tears are flooding my eyes. My vision blurs the is gone altogether.
I cry for what feels like an eternity. Finally, when I think that I won't ever stop crying the tears come to a halt. I wipe the saltiness from my face with my sleeve when I feel warm. Someone is holding me.
I turn around to see none other than Kael. He lets me go.
"Sorry, Izabelle. I probably shouldn't have done that."
He looks so embarrassed that I lean back into him and hug him. He seems surprised at first but then hugs me back. We sit like that for who knows how long when finally his phone goes off.
We both jump at the sound and he pulls out the phone.
"Oh my gosh! Its a text from my mom! She wants to know where I am!"
Kaels mother is a teacher here. She get alerts if any of her children aren't in class. She usually doesn't check until lunch or after school, but Kael has her class now. We both stand up and grab our stuff. Then, we leave as fast as humanly possible.
A/N I don't know how great a chapter that was but It ends up being really important. I have been hung up on writing this story so I hope you're enjoying it! I've been checking to see how many reads, comments, and votes I've been getting more than usual. It really motivates me to work even harder on this and keep writing. So far there's 42 reads, 8 votes, and 4 comments! Thanks for the motivation!
