Introduction
Nyella is a 14 year old girl. She has dark brown curly hair and pale blue eyes. When she was seven, her parents died in a car crash. Since then, she has been going through foster home to foster home. She’s learned to hike, sew, survive in the wild (that was an unintentional lesson), and many other things. The family she is with now is the worse. She is treated like a maid, farmer and, above all, a nanny.
Nyella absolutely despises the family. She would love for a new family. She’s tried to run away but as soon as she is found, she’s brought back not to the foster care place but that family. She would do anything for a reason to be able to leave…
Nyella bolts upright from her sleep to be caught off guard by the thick smell of smoke. She hops out of bed and dresses quickly into her hiking gear.
Grabbing her hunting supplies and the first aid kit, she races to the door. Smoke is billowing out from underneath it. She turns and runs to the window. Nyella yanks back the glass and starts to fiddle with the screen. It’s no use. The screen won’t budge.
She flips open her bag and rummages around till she finds her pocket knife. Pulling out the blade, Nyella rips through the mesh screen.
Nyella struggles through the window, tosses down her stuff and tumbles down the dew-soaked hill. After regaining her balance, she races into the forest, never looking back at the burning lot.
Nyella slows to a stand. Where is she? For approximately the last two hours, Nyella has been running blindly through the forest. As exhaustion hits, she sinks to the ground till she is sitting.
Behind her, a howl pierces the silent night. She whirls around to find a wolf charging towards her. Fear crawls through her body as she tries to remember how to move. The wolf halts a foot away from her. Its coat is sleek gray. It has a long, wet nose with sharp whiskers at the end. Its dark eyes bore into her, looking into her soul.
She slowly inches back away from it. It inches forward, keeping the distance the same. As fear wraps around her heart, she gets up and runs in the opposite direction, forever staring at the unmoving wolf over her shoulder.
Then she’s tumbling. The ground leaves scratches and bruises as she tumbles down the gorge. Nyella’s head comes into contact with something hard and the world goes black.
Its light when Nyella finally comes to. There is a dark figure standing above her. The figure speaks. Its voice is deep and harsh. Out of her line of view, a female voice replies. As Nyella’s vision focuses, she realizes that the talking figures were the wolves. She darts out from underneath the male wolf and starts to run.
“Wait!” the male wolf calls. Nyella pauses and slowly turns around. “We will not harm you. We were just making sure you were okay. I’m Granger and this is my partner and female alpha, Melinda.” He gestures to the female wolf behind him. “Who are you, might I ask?”
Nyella is stunned. The wolf is talking. “Nyella,” she stutters out.
“Nee-lea?” Granger asked.
“N-no… it’s Neye-ella.” Nyella replies.
“Well Nyella, you seem to be fine so, I hope to see you around.” Granger turns around and starts to lead his pack away.
“So you’re just going to leave me out here? Alone?” Nyella accuses Granger.
“We’ll always be watching out for you, Princess. I’m sorry we’ve always been saying your name wrong,” Melinda says to her.
