Chapter 1

Turn It Off, Unplug Me. I Can't Listen To It Anymore

Abby sighed, resting her chin in her hand as she stared out the window of her last class of the day.

She was tired.

It had been a long week and she was more than ready to go out and blow off some steam with her friends that night.

The bell rang, pulling Abby from her reverie.

Grabbing her bag off the floor and her notebook from her desk, Abby made her way to the door after the crowd of students disappeared through it.

"H-h-hey A-Abby" a familiar stutter sounded as she excited the classroom.

"Hey, Conner." Abby replied with a tired, but friendly smile as he came up to walk beside her. "How was your week?"

"G-g-good." he replied with a nervous smile. "How w-was y-y-yours?"

"Long." she told him with a sigh as she stuffed her notebook into her bag. "I'm so glad its over."

Conner opened his mouth to reply, only to get cut off by someone yelling Abby's name.

Abby and Conner turned to see Devin, Abby's ex-boyfriend running down the hall towards them.

"Hey, Baby. Ready to party at Red's tonight?" He asked before pressing his lips to her cheek.

Red's was a local bar most of the kids from school went to. It wasn't anything fancy, but Abby and her friends usual got to hang out there after hours because her best friend Tallie worked there.

"I'm not your Baby, Devin. We broke up last week. Remember?" Abby replied with an eye roll, but he wasn't listening.

His attention had locked onto Conner's obviously uncomfortable form.

"Hey, freak. What are you doing talking to my girl?" Devin asked possessively, causing Abby to roll her eyes in annoyance.

She hated it when he acted like this. Especially since it was why she broke it off with him in the first place.

"N-n-n-n-noth-nothing." Conner stuttered out, his nervousness making his stutter worsen. His head was bowed and he took a step back, obviously not wanting the confrontation.

"Devin, knock it off." She told him, grabbing his arm and giving it a rough tug. "Lets just go, okay?" She finished when he turned to look at her.

Devin stared at her for a moment before wrapping his arm around her shoulders and turning back to face Conner. "Later, loser." he said as he lead Abby down the hallway.

"Why do you treat him like that?" Abby asked when they were out of earshot.

"Treat who like what?" Devin replied, playing dumb and pissing Abby off.

"You know who I'm talking about, Devin." she growled. "And I'm really getting sick of having this freaking argument with you about it." She finished, shoving him away from her so she could escape his grasp. "In fact, breaking up with you was supposed to end this argument. Permanently!"
