I'm awake. Free from the isolation of my own mind. It's been weeks, months, years, since I've spoken to another human being. I had a family, friends, a home, but then they came. The Starlings promised to make things better, they said they could save us.
They lied.
I remember the destruction, the lives lost, the buildings burned, the reason they put me here. I also remember the scientists saying the world used to be beautiful. There were blue skies and white clouds. I don't believe them. Nowadays the skies are gray full of the pollution we put there. We ruined our planet and now it's time to pay.
The wind rips at our clothes whispering why did you do this to us but we ignore it, the dead plants mutter we used to be friends but we walk on them anyway, the sky weeps saying we gave you everything and all we do is hate on it. And natures right. It did help us, it cared for us, and in return we used it, ungrateful for what it provided. We kept taking and taking until it was too much. Nature couldn't handle the demands and now we are ruined. But then they came.
The Starlings gave us hope and told us everything would be ok. They hung posters and told speeches about their plans. We believed them and so we put them in charge. We made a mistake. I remember the protests, the fights, the yelling and crying of the people. "We didn't agree to this," we would scream.
"You should've read the fine print," they would yell back. The Starlings killed anyone who opposed, expect for me, and praised those who were too scared to fight back. That was three years ago and I wonder just how bad the world has gotten.
