-One day Dionysus found that his old schoolmaster and foster father, the Satyr Silenus, was missing. The old satyr had been drinking wine and wandered away drunk, to be found by some peasants who carried him to their king, Midas. Midas recognized him and treated him hospitably, entertaining him for ten days and nights with politeness, while Silenus delighted Midas and his friends with stories and songs. On the eleventh day, he brought Silenus back to Dionysus in Lydia. Dionysus offered Midas his choice of whatever reward he wished for. Midas asked that whatever he might touch should be changed into gold.

Midas rejoiced in his new power, which he hastened to put to the test. He touched an oak twig and a stone; both turned to gold. Overjoyed, as soon as he got home, he touched every rose in the rose garden, and all became gold.

Midas' daughter came to him, upset about the roses that had lost their fragrance and become hard, and when he reached out to comfort her, found that when he touched his daughter, she turned to gold as well.

Now, Midas hated the gift he had coveted. He prayed to Dionysus, begging him to save his daughter, Dionysus refused his petition wanting Midas to accept what he had done and the ability he asked for, Midas in despair prayed for Apollo, god of medicine, to save his daughter because of the mistake he had done.

Apollo answering the call of Midas went in for help but he couldn't do much, him not being the one who gave the gold gift.

The god feeling pity for the mortal king comforted him for days and eventually fell in love with Midas, not caring about what could happen in a relationship between a mortal and a god.

Apollo started fighting with Midas, the king being blinded by greed and pride because of having a relationship with a god and having a powerful gift.

In one of those fights, Midas accidentally grazed his fingertips against the god, without the knowledge that when a god changes between his deity form and his mortal form they loose all power and become as fragile as every human.

Dionysus after witnessing what had happened went down to earth to delight himself out of the king's pain, Midas begged him for his pardon and asked to bring back to life his beloved but Dionysus had a term.

Midas had to exchange his life for Apollo's, but also there being a curse in the next generations of males in Midas' family, every male having the curse of turning everyting they touched into gold.

The king not even caring about the others agreed to Dionysus condition, Dionysus brought Apollo back to life as well as everyone the king had touched, converting Midas into gold.

Apollo being still in love with the king, kept Midas as a statue at his palace not being able to forget the story between them.-
