Prologue: the dream

It was twilight, I was standing by the water’s edge waiting for someone, but I did not know who. Then he appeared, out of no where, carrying the sword. Without a word he handed it to me with a nod and then disappeared into the mist around us. I looked down at the sword that was given to me, it had a dark gold tint to the metallic silver and was about three feet long with inscriptions that could not be seen in this light. I carefully grabbed it by the handle and lifted it to eye level to get a closer look. Then the sword disappeared, just as the man had, into the mist and leaving a burning sensation on my wrist.

I woke up to see the sun’s rays shinning through the tree canopy. There was still a tingling sensation on my wrist. Just an aftershock, I told myself. Never, in my life, have I had such an odd dream. Usually my dreams were of my past. Never before have I dreamt of something that had nothing to do with what had been going through me head.

I shook my head in disbelief that such a thing could happen, but when I looked at my right wrist to see what was causing the tingling, I gasped softly. There, like a band on my wrist was a snake, and black and deadly snake. It hadn’t been there when I had gone asleep, and no one could have done it while I was sleeping because of my precautions of staying hidden.

But there had to be a reason for it, for why there’s a snake etched into my skin. My name is Robin Rose. And I live in the forest of Sky Island.
