EDM is an acronym for a type of music - Electronic Dance Music. A type of music filled with electronic elements and vibes, sometimes accompanied by vocals or being just fully instrumental. But no matter you readers like it or not, EDM is a great type of music with a huge fanbase and also many labels with some have their greatest fame of lives.
"Ew, EDM sucks" or "EDM, is weird and disgusting with all the electronic stuff" is what you probably say. I used to neglect electronic music (that includes EDM since it is electronic) since I was pretty attached to pop music and Owl City music at that time. I even disregard people's advice of trying to accept and listen to new types of songs since I was pretty much into Owl City and Pop songs. Furthermore, my family is the type that isn't into electronic music and prefers traditional or Chinese music especially my father who blasts his Hi-fis with traditional and Chinese music. (a huge reason why I decided to stay away from traditional and Chinese [except one song] music )
But during one particular day, the thought of staying away from and not listening to EDM changed. During the period when that day happened, I used to watch Minecraft youtubers (Don't blame me, last time everyone were going cray cray about minecraft) and one of them whom videos I watched - HuskyMudkipz. During that day, he changed his intro using a song from the Monstercat Label - Razorsharp by Pegboard Nerds and Tristam. When i first listened to it, I was instantly awed by it and immediately took a liking to it. I furthered on to find what the song is about. Since then, I followed one of the song creators - Pegboard Nerds, and found more of their amazing works like Disconnected, Heartbit and Just Like That. Unfortunately, they recently had changed their style and I had stopped listening to their new songs.
However, despite the discovery of Pegboard Nerds, I only started to listen more EDM songs starting from early 2016 (thanks to a friend's advice) from the Monstercat Label where Pegboard Nerds is from. From there, I found new awesome songs and great artists from the wonderful Monstercat label. And since then I never regretted knowing Monstercat at all. Maybe except for the moment when BOOM by Ricci is released. (Even though I still don't get it why the label accepts this but well, it is released for almost a year. Oh well.)
Let's shine some spotlight on the other music labels - NCS, Spinnin Records, Bitbird and UKF. First off, hats off to NCS since this label's releases are available for free to download for all. With this, it means that they lose out a lot in terms of revenues. But still, they still get an upper hand by having a lot of reputation and subscribers through the free downloads, and also ad revenue from their videos due to their huge number of viewers. Next off is BitBird. It is a relatively new label with notable EDM producers like San Holo and DROELOE. With the label aimed to be a fair and honest label that doesn't control freedom, it is a label that potential and rising producers, producers with interesting ideas, and people who likes discovering new music, will like and should take note of.
The third of the list is Spinnin Records. It a Dutch record label that has been in the EDM world since 1999. It also houses three iconic EDM producers of this century - Hardwell, Tiësto and Martin Garrix. So if you want to listen music especially from those three popular DJs, then Spinnin Records is for ya. Last on the list is UKF. It is an electronic music label based in the United Kingdom that aims to share all aspects of electronic music but actually, it is more of sharing electronic music with the best bass. Of course, it featured genres like House, Trap and Glitch Hop etc. which songs of these genres can be found in their channel. Their second channel houses the DnB (Drum & Bass) songs instead. Therefore, this channel is more suited for those who like to listen electronic music with bass. Yup, in UKF, it is all about the bass in the electronic music.
Of course, there are much more electronic music labels around in the world. Not only labels, there are many independent electronic music artists in this world. (One notable producer - Nanobii who has started his own music label after his recent songs got rejected by Monstercat. FeelsBadMan since he is a great Happy Hardcore music producer.) Anyways, there are many aspects of electronic music to be found in the world. It is just up to you to see if you want to discover and also accept the different and new aspects of electronic music.
After all, EDM is a great type of music and it is still is. And I hope it will grow into a type of revolutionary music with an enormous fanbase all over the world, especially the electronic label that houses the awesome electronic music I truly like - Monstercat.
