I’m so hungry; I haven’t eaten in four days. I wasn’t surprised though, this was normal. Living in an alleyway is basically life of a starvation, theft and running. I had no choice though, I was a human being (even though I’m treated as a rat) I need food to live. I steal my food mainly because well… let’s just say I’m not exactly the richest person in the world. In fact my only true belonging is the small locket around my neck. I assume my family gave it to me when I was little before my parents died. Honestly, I don’t have any clue as to what happened to them fourteen years ago, but I can only guess that it was linked with the terrible sickness that overcame much of Europe otherwise known as the Black Plague

The moon was out tonight and it shone so bright and beautiful like a pure white orb surrounded by twinkling stars. The luminous light produced fell on my face revealing the appearance of a fourteen year old girl with long wild black hair and eyes bluer than the ocean itself. Below my right shoulder, my birthmark glimmered signifying danger in the area.

I walked into the closest tavern watching closely as I would run if anyone came at me. It was quiet and pretty empty with the exception of a few drunk men sitting with their backs to me chatting with the shop keeper. All to soon a huge man appeared in the doorway with kings crest embroidered on his chest in golden threading. As our eyes met my birthmark shone brighter than ever before as realization caught up with him.

Panicking, I ran as fast as I could through the tiny area and out the back doorway into the Scarlet Woods said to be haunted by spirits of the great warriors. The guard, for being such a big man, was able to keep up with me and more than once I was sure he’d be able to reach out and catch me.

“Halt thief, in the name of King Alexander!” Did he really expect me to be afraid of him? I wasn’t afraid of King Alexander, I wasn’t afraid of anything.

Finally after what felt like running for ages the guard was well enough behind me to where I could stop and catch my breath. Slowing down, I started walking in order to stay awake, due to my lack of sleep the last few days. A green light off to the left faintly glimmered through the thick trees. The forest here was thick, sticky and darker than night itself. I was entranced by the light; it was almost as if it called to me.

It got closer and brighter almost as if it were walking towards me. The closer it got the more compelled I was to it. The tugging and magnetic impact on my seized as the green light illuminated the face of a boy about fifteen or sixteen. His hair was shaggy, black and curly and his burgundy eyes full of curiosity. The one thing that stood out to me about him was his arm. No I am not talking about his muscles. It was what was above it that scared me. Just below his shoulder and above the bicep area there was a birthmark, just like mine. It was then I noticed the faint glow of my own birthmark, glowing not in green but in lavender.

“Who are you?” I whispered almost choking on my words

“My name is Aaron, I live in these woods along with my fellow Dracons… who are you?”

“I’m Jena.. I live in an alleyway… His eyes widened noticing my birthmark. “Your one of us aren’t you?”

“One of whom”?

“She’s one of us, what should I do, should I take her to Eziah or…”

“Are you going to tell me what’s going on!! And… who’s Eziah?” The curious look in his eye intensified as he prepared to speak again.
