Prologue:

Dad frowned at me, his eyes sad.

"Pema, is this really what you want to do with your life?" Dad asked.

He gestured to my cigarette package, and then to my lighter.

"Are you just going to ruin your beautiful face?" Dad asked. "And what about your dreams? School? Boys?!"

I shrugged. "What does it matter? It's not like I have anything to look forward to."

Dad's face was a mask of worry and anger.

"Pema, just stop. I'm begging you." Dad whispered.

He touched the side of my face gently, and walked away.

A few moments later, I heard a gun shot.

No!

Daddy!

I ran inside the house and saw a sight I would never, ever forget.

My father had killed himself.

And I was now alone.
