Fiji
I sat outside on my balcony meditating and thinking. My two sisters and I just recently moved to New York from Chicago. Two different cities, same problems.
We had left after our mother had passed away and I never had a chance to meet my father who also passed away when I was only a new born. My sisters Oakland and Mars were older than me. They knew of my father they told me stories of how he was a great person and help others , but him helping others cost him his life.
My mother was a kind-hearted woman who cared about everyone. She was always joyful and never stopped talking. She spent most of her time with us girls , laughing, dancing, singing.. just being happy.
Suddenly all of that changed once the cancer started to take over her body. She never told us about her condition because she didn't want us to feel as if we needed to grow up and help more.
That's why I loved her so much. She rather us have a childhood then struggle."Fiji." Oakland spoke snapping me out of my thoughts and meditation. I turn to see her tall slender figure leaning against the balcony door frame.
"Yea?" I said grabbing my mat and rolling it up.
"Come downstairs and eat." She says turning and walking off.A few minutes later, I jog down the steps to see Oakland and Mars eating. I take a seat next to Mars who was on her phone reading some article.
"What's that?" I ask grabbing a melon and popping it into my mouth.
"Some article about the poverty rate." She says while still focusing on the story. I shrug my shoulders and continue to eat.My sisters were very beautiful and artistic. Oakland is the oldest, she has long black dreads that she usually kept pulled back. She's tall and slim. Her milk chocolate skin was smooth and soft. She didn't have tattoos but she had a septum piercing. Oakland is the more quite type , she never spoke much , but when she did she had a very soft but dominant tone.
Mars on the other hand was the middle child and also the wildest . She was covered in tattoos and had multiple piercings. She reminded me of Sza when it came to her hair. It's long and thick and was everywhere. She never cared to tame it and she doesn't want to. She was more so short than tall and had curves in all the right places. She was always talking other than when she is focused. When she talked, she spoke with confidence and ego.
Then there's me. I'm more in between the both of them I was quite but wild and I had a few tattoos and piercings.
When it came down to my hair I followed behind Mars, my hair was a little shorter but was still wild and all over the place. I was short and curvy. I wasn't much of a talker but I could hold a decent conversation. I'm more of a weirdo and rather stay to myself."Fiji , go get ready for school." Mars said leaving the table to go get ready also. Mars and I were a two years apart She was a freshman in college and I was a junior in high school.
I quickly run upstairs and throw on a navy blue jacket and dark ripped jeans with vans. I grabbed my bag and phone.
"Fiji come on before you be late." Oakland called up the stairs. I quickly rushed and got into my sisters black Jeep.
Vic
I sat in the lunch room with my homies Stokeley and Twan.
"Aye nigga did you hear about the new girl?" Twan asked me while taking a drink from his Powerade.
"Naw nigga." I said rolling my eyes. That's all you been hearing about at my school lately. This new girl , I've heard so many things about shorty I'm starting to not even like her.
"Well I heard she was bad yo." Stokeley said.
I shrugged my shoulders and continued to eat my sandwich.
The bell rung and I grab my things hurrying off to class. My first hour was art. The tardy bell rung and I sat at my table waiting for Miss. Lu to start. Before she could and girl with wild ass hair walked in.
"Ah! You must be Fiji Johnson?" Miss.Lu asked the girl. She shook her head and moved the hair out of her face. She was beautiful.
Miss.Lu made her sit by me at my table. When she walked over she smiled and sat.
"Hi I'm Marcus." The boy I shared the table with said. She gave him a long look before smiling and making two deep dimples appear.
"Fiji." She said. She looked at me , before tilting her head to the side.
"Hi , Vic." I gave her an confused look.
"How you know my name?" I said still confused.
"It's on your sketchbook." She said laughing. Now I feel dumb.
"Oh yea, hey." I said feeling my face heat up a little bit.
"Well class today I want you guys to draw what beauty is. Then explain why you think it's beautiful." Miss. Lu said.
I start drawing then Marcus started talking.
"Aye so ma, you mixed or something? He said I look up at him then over at her. She looked annoyed but honestly I wanted to know too."Nergo, no I'm African American, I just have a lot of hair." She said rolling her eyes.
After that he stopped talking and the rest of the hour we did our assignment.
