Abigail awoke to the familiar sound of her mother's shrill voice, batting down the door with its volume along with her fists. "Get up Abigail or you can walk all the way to school in this heat!"
Abigail remained laying on her soft mattress that she worked for months at a run-down diner to be able to afford. Her mother wouldn't buy her anything she wanted let alone something better than what she had.
With a heavy sigh, she sat up on the edge of her bed and wondered what it would be like to live alone instead of with a parent who acted as if it would be most convenient for her to cease existing.
The daydream set in as it usually does, spreading a smile across her freckled face as she saw herself in a tidy apartment of her own wandering to her own bathroom to wash her brown curls, using her own large shower, not having to worry about that voice interup—
"Get up for god's sake! I know you can hear me!"
Abigail stood up so quickly she didn't look at the ground before she put her foot forward to step on a pen she must've dropped the night before. "Comin-" Losing her footing, she tried to grab something on her way down but there was nothing there, only a bookshelf which met the side of her head. "oomf." The thudding pain she felt at first quickly started to fade.. as did everything else..
"Oh seriously Abigail, you have five minutes to come out or I'm leaving!"
The familiar voice was getting softer and softer until finally, all that she met with was darkness and silence. Had she passed out? She was still slightly aware though. With no concept of time she could only guess that it had been a few minutes until she heard any sound again.
Birds? .. The melodic tune of birds chirping like they were talking to her, telling her to get up was starting to grow louder and clearer in her ears. She tried opening her eyes but the light was too bright. Why is there light? I never have my blinds open. In that moment she started to sit up slowly only to stop half way. She spread her fingers to feel something that definitely wasn't the old carpet that lined the floor of her room. She moved her hands around now to feel, Grass?
She tried sitting all the way up and instantly regretted it, her head still spinning from her fall. When she managed to sit up properly she brought a hand to her forehead to shield her eyes as she opened them fully. It took them a few seconds to adjust but when they did she couldn't believe what she saw.
Trees. She was sitting in an opening surrounded by trees. Not only that but there were birds in those trees. Birds of all sorts of colours that she had never seen before. Did I bump my head and teleport to South America? She ran a hand through her short brown curls, "No that's impossible, it must just be a dream." Talking aloud to herself now, she wasn't afraid anyone would hear her.
There was a strange noise just to the left of her as she started to stand. If this was going to be her dream, she was going to make the most of it. It's not every day Abigail got to take a walk in a forrest. When she turned she saw a fawn that couldn't be more than a week old, it was so small. Surprisingly, it was looking up at her with pure curiosity, not a glimmer of fear like deer so often look upon humans with. Abigail had never believed in hunting any kind of animal, in fact most of the time her mother could never even get her to eat meat as a small child unless she masked it in pies and stews.
"Have you lost your mother little one?" The fawn just turned its head like it didn't understand a word she said, it just opened its mouth to let out another small sound. It was almost as if it was saying hello.
Abigail bent down and picked some grass, curious to see if the fawn would willingly eat out of a human's hand. She reached out offering a clump of grass. The fawn stared at it blankly for a few seconds, then looked at her face, then back to her hand and lurched forward and began eating.
