In Light Of This

Darkness everywhere. It was cold, but that doesn't matter when you are running. Running, running. Faster, faster. The ground blurring beneath your feet. You can't feel the ground or hear the sound of the screaming because your heart is thumping too loudly. Thump-thump. Thump-thump. It never ends. You can hear the screams echoing through your ears. There's nothing you can do. You have to find a partner and survive. *It's hard to survive during an apocalypse.* You think. *How can I survive?*

Chapter 1 "In the Woods"

Eliana sets the rabbit on the ground, readying it so she can eat. This is the first kill she's gotten since this nightmare started. "Man, this fur will feel good on my feet. If I can skin this correctly and if I can line these cruddy boots with them, it'll be a whole lot better." She said, holding up a pair of old oversized Uggs. "Well, let's give this a go." She began to skin the rabbit. 20 minutes later; her feet were nice and cozy in a pair of rabbit-skin boots. She stirred the pot and just hoped that she didn't get any diseases from her concoction. The recipe: water, rabbit parts, and berries. Hoping that it was ok, she was half-tempted to feed it to her dog, Jo. Jo is a Husky-German Shepherd mix. He looks a lot like a wolf but is too sweet to be one. She smiled and patted Jo on the head, " I would NEVER try something out on you, boy. Now, let's eat! I'm starving!"

Chapter 2 "They're Coming"

In the morning, she woke up to the sound of Jo whining. "What is it boy?" She whispered. He poked his head outside and wiggled his ears back and forth. "You hear something?" She asked as she stepped out of her shelter. She heard it as soon as she stepped out. "They're coming. Let's go." she stated. There were far away screams and crashes. She started to pack up their things. "C'mon, c'mon," she mumbled, getting increasingly louder, " c'mon, c'mon, c'mon!" She heard them getting closer. "Run!" She yelled at Jo as they charged through the trees. She looked back. She could see them; those faces that were now almost unrecognizable. Those zombies. She knew some of them. Yet she knew that if she got close enough, they would poison her just by her smelling their stench. That odor of death, though they aren't dead yet. Most zombies stay alive for around a year. And if they actually had their brains, they could figure out how to reproduce and survive. But since there is only one zombie that has a brain, that is impossible. She looked back and saw one face which almost made her stop. The face of her all-time crush, Jack. They shared a birthday and were almost look-alikes, but Jack had soft brown eyes compared to her sharp green ones. They had planned to start dating once they were in high school. They planned this for years and they were only one year away from love when the Oxythenochloride sample was stolen from Burkley Labs. This began the apocalypse. She snapped out of it suddenly when she almost ran into a tree, she needed to focus. She suddenly felt a hand grab her backpack. Before she could scream a hand covered her mouth and something hard hit her in the head. The world spun and went black.

Chapter 3 "Salvage City"

She woke up, her head throbbing painfully. Eliana didn't realize where she was until she saw his face. "Aaagghhh!!!!" She screamed rolling over, punching and kicking wildly. "Don't hurt me! Leave me alone! Aaaggghhh!" "Don't worry, I'm not gonna hurt you." He laughed at her, " I was just rescuing you from those zombies!" Her foot was still in mid-air when she spoke cautiously, "Sooo... you AREN'T trying to kill me?" "Pffff! Bahahahahahaha!!! What would make you think that?!?" He laughed. "Uuuh, the fact that you covered my mouth and conked me on the back of the head with, what? A rock?" She exclaimed questioningly. "Uh, first of all, missy, I covered your mouth because you were going to scream and attract their attention; SECOND of all, you're the one who struggled and whacked your head on a tree! I didn't make you act that stupid!" He said angrily, " And ya'know what! I didn't have to save you! I could've just watched and let you run 'til ya dropped, missy! But uh-uh! Johnny HAD to be the hero and save the 'damsel in distress' who's running for her life from zombies! Oh, and your dog was smart enough to duck in here before you!" "Uhhh, where is here?" She asked. He sighed, "Welcome to Salvage City, the biggest shelter in all of Chicago." There were people everywhere. They were in a literal underground city/shelter! "Dude, I feel like I'm living out Fallout..." she whispered in awe. "Your welcome." Said Johnny, and he walked away.
