Emily Brooks was sprawled out on her double sized bed, silence lingered throughout her room. She took in a heavy breath, held it, then set it free. Emily was thinking about anything and everything, her mind clouded as the first day of school approached.

Midtown School of Science and Technology or for shorter, Midtown High, was starting next week and Emily was not ready. Usually she would be ecstatic for the first day of school but ever since high school, that changed. She experienced first hand what it felt like to lose yourself, to feel alone and she found that within her sister Chloe. Chloe entered high school the same person Emily had known all her life, then she left unrecognizable. Chloe has her life back on track now but back then she was a mess.

She started to deal with some ugly people and even though Chloe didn't tell her, Emily knew something was wrong. Chloe was like the mother Emily never had. Their parents weren't around much, always traveling for their business or always cooped up in their office working and would leave the two girls alone to fend for themselves. So when Chloe went through her rough patch, it not only affected her, but also Emily because that meant her only parental figure was gone.

Freshman year was last year for Emily and she was terrified. She didn't want what happened to Chloe, to happen to her. She ended up doing the complete opposite of what she wanted to do, she distanced herself.

Emily wasn't the most popular in elementary and middle school but she had a good amount of friends. Within the first month of being at Midtown, she disconnected with all but two of her friends, Peter Parker and Ned Leeds, in fear that they would get rid of her sooner or later, so she decided sooner was the best option. The trio had been best friends ever since they were put in a group together in grade six. Emily took over the project and the two boys followed in her lead and ever since then, they've been inseparable. They just worked really well together right off the bat and never left each other sides. Their friendship is like no other. No one was a third-wheel, they're all interested in the same stuff, all really smart (Peter being the smartest of course) and they just enjoy each other's company.

Peter Parker and Ned Leeds saved Emily Brooks.

Emily was pulled from her thoughts when she felt something move violently on her stomach. She grabbed her phone and sat up in bed while simultaneously checking her phone to see that Peter was calling her. She clicked the green button and held her phone to her ear.

"Hello?"

"Hey Em," Peter said. Emily smiled at her nickname. She felt so special when people called her that, made her feel important. Especially when Peter said it. Ever since that day in grade six, her feelings for him have only grown stronger. "Ned and I are bored and we don't know what to do so can you come over to alleviate our boredom?"

A huge grin swept across her face, even though they are best friends and hang out all the time, it made her happy knowing Peter wanted to be around her. "Yeah sure, i'll be there in 15. See you soon Pete."

"Bye Em," she hung up and started to get ready, still grinning from ear to ear. She didn't fully admit to her feelings for Peter until grade eight when she was at a sleepover with some friends and they were all talking about their crushes and whatnot. She was so lost in thought, that one of them had to throw a pillow at her and that started the cliché pillow fight. Ever since then, she's had to suppress her affection towards the nerdy boy, knowing that expressing herself could result in losing her best friend.

Once she was finished getting ready, Emily checked her phone, only a few minutes had passed since her phone call, she put her phone back in her pocket and headed towards the door. She walked down the steps of her home and headed towards the Parker residence.
