Chapter 10: Chicago

Hallie's P.O.V:

I woke up to loud chatter. I sit up, only to be pushed back down. "Stay down." A soft voice speaks to me. I look up to see one of Talon's boys. I believe his name is Anan, but I could be wrong. He rubs my back and pets my hair. I lay back down, my eyes still drowsy. Someone taps my back. I look back up to see that dude again. He leans down and whispers in my ear. "I need you to stick to me. I need to tell you something when we are alone." My eyes widen. What could he have to tell me? I nod. We sit in silence, until I realized that we had pulled into a new house. I cuddle into myself, when Anan places a blanket on top of me. "Where are we?" "Chicago." I shiver in place, when the car jolts. "What the hell is going on up there?" Anan yells to the driver. "Sorry, slippery roads."

The car finally stops. The trunk opens and Anan climbs out. I sit there with my blanket wrapped tightly around my shoulders. "Come out, Hallie." Talon says. He holds his hand out. I look towards Anan, pull the blanket even closer, and stay still. "C'mon. Let's get a move on before Talon gets here." Anan pulls my arm gently, ushering me out of the trunk. I take a step out to see the ground is covered in ice. A memory sprung forth:

I could hear laughter. The smell of cold, crisp air hits my face. My friends are all on the front lawn. It's January, and the snow is hard. Duncan picks up a snowball and hits Connor, another friend of mine. Connor laughs and runs toward me. "C'mon Hallie! Help me take down Duncan!" I laugh and feel snow underneath my fingertips. I pick up the snow and launch a snowball at Duncan. We're laughing. Tracy and Toni walk out, eyes in shock. "Y'all are childish." "Let them be kids as long as they want, Toni." Toni starts towards us, and falls into a mountain of snow. We all start laughing. "Hey Hallie!" I turn to see a snowball flying toward my face.

Hallie...

"HALLIE!!!" I am broken out of my trance, to see that I had fallen. My blanket was getting wet on the bottom. Anan was kneeling next to me. "You okay?" I shake my head, feeling more tears spring forth. "Oh, don't start crying.... Hallie...." I start sobbing. I wish you guys were here. I feel something bend in my pocket. I pull out the object, to see the photo I took from Duncan's house. I cuddle to it again. Anan sighs and stands back up. I look up to him, as he bends down and picks me up. His chest was very warm, so I cuddled up to it. He carried me for a couple minutes, until I hear loud footsteps. I pretend to be asleep, as the person comes closer. "Anan, why are you carrying her? Just let her walk." By the tone of the voice, it was Talon. "I was going to, but she collapsed as soon as she got out of the trunk. I think her legs are numb or something. It seems that she fell asleep. Guessing she's worn herself out." "What are you talking about?" Anan sighs once more. "When she stepped out of the trunk, she stood there for about 2 minutes, then suddenly fell to the ground. When I tried to help her up, she started crying and hugged a photo. Looks like she's thinking of them. Are you sure we should keep up this rouse?" I heard a smack. "You idiot. Of course. She has to believe that her group died because of the robot things. Speaking of which, no one followed us, right? Just because they weren't at the store, I did see a symbol. Let them take Shaker. We'll stay here in Chicago." I started to sob, but managed to keep my eyes closed. "Anan, take her to Parker and I's room. Parker can help her get back on her feet. Then she can start being a proper doctor." Anan started walking again. I was still sobbing. How could they? My friends are dead because they wanted me? It's my fault... It has to be. Anan sets me down in what I presumed is Talon and Parker's room. "Hallie, I know you're awake. I need to tell you the truth." I sit up and look at him. "What. Happened. To. My. Friends."
