Chapter Two:

Jacob rubbed my back to wake me up.

"Get up, Pems," He said gently.

I sat up and rubbed my eyes. Once my vision cleared, I could see Quil and Embry leaning against the counter in the kitchen.

"Hey, Pema!" Quil said. He smiled at me, his eyes shining. He looked just like he always did- happy and excited.

Embry smiled at me shyly, and didn't say anything. I would have been floored if he had, because Embry was almost painfully shy, even around people he knew.

"Hi, guys." I said with a yawn.

Quil laughed. Embry cracked a grin.

"Major bedhair," Jacob said.

I roller my eyes. "Tell me about it!"

I went into the bathroom to brush the tangles of out of my hair. I had horrible bedhair, which meant I had thrown myself around a lot during the night. I guess I had been thinking a lot about my dad.

I pulled my hair back into a braid and tied it off. I noticed I left my suitcase in the bathroom and it was open. I didn't think I'd left it open.

Oh, well. I had been super tired the night before, and I had probably just forgotten.

I looked out the bathroom window and judged the weather. The sky was gray and gloomy, and it was raining. Typical La Push weather.

I dug around in my suitcase until I found my sister Wren's cotton shirt. It was gray and thin from overwearing, but a lot of my clothes were like that. I tossed my sleeping shirt in my suitcase and slipped the shirt over my head. I found yesterday's shorts on the floor and decided I didn't want to wear them. I found my pair of cutoff Jean shorts and slipped them on. I was glad they still covered up the scar on my right leg.

I dragged my suitcase out of the bathroom and down the hall. I tossed it in the closest corner to the couch and started making up the sofa bed.

"You know you don't have to do that," Jacob said.

I shrugged.

"I'm used to it," I said. I flipped the bed shut and put the couch cushions back on it.

"There," I said.

Quil and Jacob both gave me weird looks.

But Embry was looking at something else.

He cleared his throat.

"What's that?" Embry asked. He pointed to my right leg. I looked down. The leg of my shorts had slid up, revealing the long scar on the back of my right leg. I slid the leg of my shorts down.

"A scar," I said.

Embry bit his lower lip. "From where?"

"Car accident," I said.

Jacob's eyes widened. "That- that car accident?"

"Yeah."

Quil gave us all weird looks.

"What car accident?" He asked.

Oh, great. No one told him.

I didn't say anything. Should I tell him?!

"Um... uh... the car accident most of my family died in. Except me. And my dad- but he was at work." I said.

Quil's eyes widened and he didn't say anything else.

I flopped on the couch and sighed.

"Are you hungry?" Jacob asked, breaking the awkward silence.
