The first day of school is always the worse day of school. It was the worst day because it is on that day, the first day of school, that it is all decided. It is decided where you sit at lunch during the rest of the year, who you associate with and what "clique" you belong to, and whether you are at the top of the food chain or the bottom of the food chain.

Unfortunately for me, that was all decided for me on the last day of school last year. My Sophomore year of high school. Because of that tragic last day of school, I would forever be known as the lesbian who was outed by Kehlani Parrish. The one who was played like a fool by the captain of the cheerleading team.

I stood in front of the full length mirror that was leaning against my wall in my room and gazed at my reflection.

I was on the short side, only standing 5'4" barely. I had curves but not bad curves. Lauren and Sean said that I was thick in a good way. I had long black hair that fell past my shoulders and brown eyes behind thick framed, nerdy hipster-like, prescription glasses.

My outfit of choice for the first day back to school this year was a striped spaghetti strapped crop top with white high waisted skinny jeans and a pair of black wedged heeled boots. I accessorized with a black choker and a pair of cuffed earrings.

I leaned closer to my mirror, touching up my make up, applying a little bit of pink lipgloss to my lips.

"You look nice," I heard a voice say from behind me.

I jumped and spun around, my hand grabbing over my heart. I sighed in relief when I saw that it was only my older brother, Kalin. He stood there wearing a teasing grin as he leaned against my doorframe, his arms crossed over his chest.

"Thanks, Kal," I smiled, dropping my hand from my chest. I turned back to my mirror to continue to try to fix my make up,"You look good too."

"Guess we can thank our parents for something then," Kalin said with a low, strained laugh. An awkward silence fell over us. I looked over at my brother to see his jaw clenched. He was obviously still very ticked off with our father and I couldn't say I blamed it.

He was right though. We did get our good looks from our parents. Before our mother died she was 35 years old looking 23 and our father is 45 and still looks 30 years old. Black don't crack, was what my father always said.

"Yeah, I guess we can," I said as I moved away from my mirror, deciding to just finish my make up.

I made my way over towards my bed to grab my phone and my backpack, I turned my head as my brother entered my room with a rare, rather serious expression.

"I want you to have your phone on you at all times, okay?" Kalin asked me as he stood in front of me. I had to look up at him, since he was 6'0',"I'm only a call away. I won't let you go through what you went through last year. I wasn't there then, but I am now, okay?"
