Chapter Twenty-One

Tiffany and I had managed to find a small cave that would be okay for a base while her ankle healed up.

It was beginning to get dark, and we still didn't have any food. The gnawing feeling in my stomach was starting to get hard to ignore.

Maybe Tiffany was reading my expression. "You can go look for food, if you want. I'll be fine here."

"Are you kidding? If I go out there with my knife, I'll be leaving you where you can't fight, can't get to any source of water, and with no weapon. I can't risk that. We're a team."

"And as half of the team, I say we need food to survive. And I have an idea." She pointed to the sticks littering the snowy ground. "I'm decent with spears."

I pieced together what she was saying, and grabbed a sturdy stick from outside.

Tiffany scooted over to watch, and I did my best to shape one end of the stick into a sharp point.

"There." I said. "I think that'll work."

"Yeah, thanks. I was starting to feel kind of useless without anything to fight with." She grins, and I return it.

"Alright, I'll be back soon. Are you sure you'll be safe?" I ask her.

"Yes, Mom." She rolls her eyes jokingly, and I smile again.

"Okay then. I won't go far, just yell if anything happens." She gives me a thumbs up, and I leave the cave, into the icy air.

I watch my breath form tiny white clouds in the cold, fascinated for a second. I always loved how my breath does that in the winter. To me, the little cloud shows that spring will be coming soon, so treasure this cute little cloud that only comes in the winter time, as well as all of the other beauty that comes with winter and leaves with it.

I grasp my knife tightly, regaining my focus. Little clouds don't represent springtime in here. They represent another second of life. Every cloud is one more second, and I want every second I can get. Preferably, enough seconds so I can get out of here.

No, wait. I want Tiffany to get out of here more then I do. Or Adam. They have more to live for then I do.

I shake my head. Right now, I have to focus on both Tiffany and I.

A hologram flashes in the sky, and I remember the cannon I heard earlier. The girl from District Nine, Rose, appears in the sky for a split second until she disappears, having escaped the Games forever.

I make my way through the treacherous forest, watching for slippery patches of ice, holes covered by the snow, and of course, food.

------------*le magical time skip*-----------------

After an hour out in the snowy woods, I've still found nothing.

"Geez, would it kill them to keep a few edible berry bushes around?" I mutter under my breath.

It's almost comical how the sponsor package floats down at my feet. I lean over and pick it up, unable to contain my excitement. A sponsor package!

I brush the parachute away, and unscrew the lid, and am rewarded with a container full of berries. I almost laugh out loud at how ironic that is.

Almost, until a rustling in the bushes makes me stop dead in my tracks. From the bushes appear the two District Twelve tributes. I think their names were Jordan Maron and....Kaylie. Kaylie Darkclaw.

"Hey Ten." the girl, Kaylie, smirks at me. "What's in the package?"

"What's it to you?" I retort. "You two in an alliance?"

"What's it to you?" Jordan mocks me. "Listen, Ten, we can do this the easy way, or the hard way. You can give us the food, and we won't hurt you."

"Or we can go the very, very bloody way." Kaylie's smile is maniacal, almost evil. Like she's hoping I pick the, as she put it, "very, very bloody way."

I'm not one to give up easily, so I put on a straight face. "Not a chance I'm giving you my food."

Kaylie grins. "Alright the-"

"Hold up, Kaylie." Jordan interrupts.

Kaylie turns to look at him, a very ticked-off look on her face. "What?"

"Don't you remember our other piece of the argument?"

By the way they both start grinning, I know it's nothing good.

"What 'other piece'?" I ask.

"Let's just say that there's one more member of our alliance who's going after your....friend." Kaylie smirks, and I can feel my face drain of color.

"Eliza's headed straight for Tiffany. She's quite the fighter." Jordan's smirk is almost identical to Kaylie's, and I can see how they're from the same District.

I know there's a chance I can beat both these guys and get back to Tiffany, and I'm going to take it.

"There's no chance I'm letting you two take my sponsor gift. Bring it on." I tighten my grip around my knife, and Kaylie laughs.

"I think we've got you beat, Ten." She grins, and pulls out a sword the length of my forearm, while Jordan grasps a bow, a quiver of arrows slung over his shoulder.

"Let's see what you've got, Twelve." I mutter, and they attack.

Kaylie swings her sword, and I jump over it, dodging it by an inch.

Jordan is a terrible shot. His arrows keep missing me by a mile.

I swipe my knife at Kaylie, and manage to cut her arm. She yelps in pain, but then regains her composure and comes at me again. (A/N: I feel like I'm obligated to say that I will probably never beat Darkclaw in a fight)

She swings her sword again, and this time, I don't dodge fast enough. Kaylie's sword cuts deep into my arm. I scream, falling down on my knees. I clutch my arm with one hand, hoping to stanch the blood. In my other hand, I'm still grasping my knife.

Jordan stops firing arrows, and grins. "You can finish her off, Kaylie."

Kaylie steps up beside me. "Well, Ten, looks like you just lost the Sixtieth Hunger Games." She laughs.

"No." I say. "You did."

I jab my knife upward, straight into her heart.

Kaylie's eyes widen, and so do Jordan's. She falls over as Jordan rushes over to her, catching her, begging her to stay with him.

I get up, and run away before he realizes that it's futile. She can't be saved.

As if on cue, I hear a shrill scream that can only mean one thing.

Tiffany.
