Smoke slowly drifted out the top windows of the towering building. Injured people and medics littered the parking lot infront of the hospital. Everyone was coughing violently, and some were even lying on the ground unconcious. My mind raced as I grazed the crowd, searching for my mom's face in the sea of ashen people. I didn't see her anywhere, and I started to panick. Then I noticed that some people were in the back of the hospital. Crossing my fingers, I ran to the back.
There weren't nearly as many people in the back as the front, but it was still quite crowded. I didn't see my mom anywhere back there, but then I spied one of my mom's friends. I ran up to her.
" Hey, Jane!" I yelled to her. She was a heavy set colored woman, and she was also very kind hearted. She looked up and spotted me, so she came over to talk.
"Hey, Alice. What you doin' here?" she asked, worry clearly in her voice. I shook off her question and continued with what i was going to say.
"Have you seen my mom? I need to find her and make sure she's okay," I said. Jane just stared at me sadly for a few seconds.
"Sorry baby, but no one has seen her yet... everyone is wondering where she is," she answered. I stood in shock. No one knew where my mom was? What if she was still in there?
I ran to the front of the hospital. Just as I made it to the front, the medics pulled someone out of the front door. They pulled a stretcher up to them and slowly, they picked up the woman and layed her on it. Then I noticed who the woman was. My mom. I sprinted as fast as I could up to them to see my mom.
"Mom!" I screamed. One of the men helping her stopped me before I could make it to her though. She was unconcious, and was covered in burns thats had blood oozing out of them. I couldn't stand seeing her like that.
" That's my mom! Let me go! That's my mom!" I screamed. Hot tears streaked my face now, and I couldn't see clearly. All I could do was break down. I fell onto the ground, sobbing. The man that stopped me tried to comfort me as I watched them put her into the ambulance. How could this have happened? ? Who would be sick enought to do this? Anger rushed over me, and I ordered the man to bring me along.
"I'm sorry, but I'm not supposed to let you in the vehicle," he said. I glared at him for a second and I could feel my face getting red. I was about to explode on him. He apparently saw this coming, so he changed his mind.
"Fine, get in the back." he ordered me. I jumped into the ambulance right as they were shutting the doors. I looked down at my mom's fragile being. Another tear slid down my cheek and fell onto her chest.
"I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry mom...," I breathed. A man came over to her and started trying to tend to her wounds. I gazed out the back window and watched the giant, smoking building fade into a miniscule speck. I didn't know it then, but that was the last time me and my mom would be together with both of us living.
