Another one of them crawls out from the dark. A sword and an axe materializes in my hands and I swing wildly, cutting off its spider like legs and goat like head.

"Kierstin!" A call dissipates my surroundings as my 23-year-old sister Sabrina calls me from the back porch.

Our parents were executed over ten years ago after word got out that they hadn't been doing the Procedure for six and a half years. So now my sister takes care of us. Us meaning me, my younger 14-year-old twin brothers, my four younger cousins and my eleven year old sister, . So in other words, I help out a lot.

"Help make dinner, won't you?" I leap up the steps to help my sister.

"Dreaming again?" she asks while I'm stirring the stew. I nod. Sabrina sighs. "You know its a waste of time, right?"

"Yeah. . . ."

"Why don't you get help? I mean, what if this isn't permanent?"

I tense. "I don't need help," I say firmly.

"Hm." Sabrina turns back to her cutting board laid with a slightly disoriented array of vegetables across the top.

A noise comes from down the hall in Jolie's bedroom. Jolie is my little sister. She's twelve, and the youngest of the Jasen children. She was barely two months old when our parents were executed.

I stick my head around the door. Jolie's feet are on her desk, and her laptop is resting on her knees.

"Hey." Jolie grunts. I sit down on the bed beside her.

"You might want to put some earbuds in or something. That's making a lot of noise."

"Or something." She turns back to her laptop.

I sigh. "Look, I know you're mad now that Aunty and Uncle Smith are dead our cousins have to live with us-"

"And the two most annoying had to stay in my room."

"-but we can't complain. I know how much you want to, but we can't."

Jolie's silent for a few seconds. Suddenly she whips around and yells, "It's not fair! Why do I have to be the worst-treated? You get a room to yourself!"

"Actually, that's not true. No one in this household has a room to themselves. I have a room with Sabrina and the baby triplets."

"Yeah, like you always had a responsibility."

I slam my hand on the back of her laptop, closing it. "I was nearly five years old when I was forced to watch our parents die in front of me. The minute that their hearts stopped, the very second, a huge load of responsibility was placed on my shoulders! You don't have any responsibility whatsoever! You don't know what it's like being me! You have no idea!" I storm out of her room and race up the stairs and crawl into the attic. I sit in the corner and pull my knees up to my chest. A single tear runs down my cheek and drips off my chin, landing on the floor with a plink. The air is heavy with dust, and it's hot and thick. It feels too open, and I curl up in a tighter ball, wanting to protect myself. My breathing became irregular as more tears dripped off my chin.

"I just... want to be...."

Normal.
