Dead

My lifeless body lied on the concrete. Everett came up from behind and held me whispering in my ear,

"You died when you took all those pills, I tried to make you throw them up. You threw up a few, not enough. You died crying, I held you. You died, loved."

I cried out in sorrow and buried my head into Everett's shoulder, not wanting to see my rotting corpse. He held me tighter,

"It's okay Hazel, it's okay."

Once I had calmed down a bit he held my hand tightly and we walked out of the tunnels, leaving my corpse behind. We sat in my room, not speaking. Everett's eyes were red, he must've been crying too. We sat shoulder to shoulder on my rug. I broke the silence,

"What do I tell my parents? They'll actually lose it if they figure out I killed myself."

Everett looked over at me and then back at his hands, "you can't tell them yet."

"Yeah, figures. So what do we do now?"

"What we always do. We can play more games if you want."

"Come here," I said while walking over to my bed.

He walked over to me and I kissed him clumsily. He grabbed my head and we started making out. Then we sat on the bed without breaking the kiss and I took off my shirt. His eyes expanded as I removed my shirt then he snapped back to reality and took his shirt off too. He helped me take off my pants and I helped unbuckle his belt. We both stripped down, I was wearing a cami and panties and he had his boxers on. We got under the covers,

"Are you sure you want to do this, Hazel?"

"I'm sure."

"I don't want to hurt you, I love you Hazel."

"I'll be fine, I love you too."

The Next Day, Afternoon

After we had made love I felt better, not as numb. Everett was laying next to me propped up on his elbow with his hand pressed against his cheek. Light coming in from the window made a nimbus above his head making him look angelic. He turned his head toward me,

"Did it hurt? The first time usually does," he asked concerned.

"No but it was intense."

"For me too," he said with a shy smirk.

"You really are here, aren't you?" I said as I traced my finger along his jawline.

"Of course. I'll always be here, if that's what you want."

"They'll always be here too, right. The.. whatever, others."

"The people from the past?"

I nodded in response.

"They can't hurt us, Hazel. We are invincible together."

I smiled at him.

"Hazel!" I heard my dad yell from downstairs.

I turned my head toward the door then looked over at Everett, but he had disappeared.

"One minute!"I yelled back to my dad.

I grabbed my clothing off the floor and put it back on. I heard a rapid pounding on my door. I rushed over to the door and opened it, my dad stood in the door frame. He grabbed my wrist tightly and dragged me downstairs with him.

"What's your problem?" I asked as I tried to pull my hand away.

"We are going to see your mother."

"I can't leave the house, I'm dead! I'm cursed to walk the halls for eternity." I thought to myself.

"No!"

"What did you say, Hazel?" He said angrily.

"I don't want to go! You can't make me!"

"Why are you acting like such a brat?! Your mother is in a insane asylum and you don't even want to see her!"

"I can't go, please don't make me," I said as tears sprung to my eyes.

"You are going! Get in this car right now!"

"Fine," I said while laying down on the back seats, "I'm gonna be sick."

He started the engine and backed out of the driveway. I watched from my bedroom window as he drove away without me. Everett stood next to me with his arm around my shoulder. Tears ran down my cheeks at the realization that I'd never be able to leave this damn house. I'm stuck here forever but at least I have Everett. As if on cue he said,

"Lets do something fun."

"Okay."

I grabbed my laptop and sat down on my bed, Everett came over and sat by me. Our shoulders touched.

"Look up Youtube," I instructed.

"YouTube?"

"Yeah. It's this site where you can watch anything you want. It helps when I get bored."

He typed into the search bar "Utube."

"No, it's youtube with a Y not a U."

"Oh," he looked over and me and smiled dorkily.

"One of these days this computer will be obsolete. We won't be able to watch YouTube. We'll be like all the others here, prisoners in a windowless cell," I said sadly.

"We aren't like the others here, we love each other."

"But what about our future, will we get married? We can't have kids."

He looked at me blankly with a little sadness in his eyes, "No we can't have kids, but we have each other. I will never stop loving you, Hazel."

I set aside the laptop and lied down. He lied down beside me. We cuddled as our eyes closed and we drifted asleep.

I woke up to the headlights of my dad's car shining through the window. I heard him slam the door and come inside the house.

"Hazel!" he yelled.

"Everett, get up!" I whispered.

His eyes fluttered open,

"Huh?"

"My dad! He's coming."

I got up and Everett vanished. My dad stomped up the stairs and opened my door,

"Where the hell did you go! Your mother was upset that you didn't come with, she's in the car."

"I'm sorry dad. I wanted to come I swear! But I couldn't."

"What are you talking about Hazel? Are you on drugs?"

"No! Listen to me dad!"

"What are you on? Tell me, now!"

"I'm not on drugs dad," I yelled, "I'm dead," I whispered while weeping.

"Hazel you aren't making sense, we have to go now! We are going to live with your aunt and your mom will have the babies there."

"Don't you understand dad? When people die they can't leave here! I'm stuck, you have to take mom and get out of here. Don't worry about me I'll be fine."

"Hazel stop! You're talking crazy." He grabbed my hand and tried to drag me but stopped when he heard my mom screaming from outside.

He looked at me, "stay here."

Then he ran outside to attend to my mom.
