Soulmate AU where soulmates have matching, completely, 100% identical wings.
Elaboration: Every set of soulmate wings are 100% unique.
Many people wear wing jackets, which cover their wings entirely, so some may never realize who their soulmate is if they have never seen them jacketless.
Wing tests can be conducted to see if there is anyone who has your wings, but this is expensive. Wings are compared by feather color (they can be any color), feather shape (kite, diamond, and bird feather shape), feather length/size (short is 3 inches, medium is 4-5 inches, and long is 7-8 inches), wing shape (triangular, arch, rounded, and linear), feather layering (scaled, sanded, topped/eagle, blank, or tipped), and any unique markings on the wings.
EXAMPLE SHORT STORY:
[The characters in this story are Evan and Connor from Dear Evan Hansen, as well as a few others from the same musical.]
Evan took a look at himself in the mirror, stretching out his wings. His wings were a medium size, with the feathers a vibrant blue with black tips. They had an arch shape. He had a strange, out of place single deep red feather on his left wing. He didn't mind the abnormality; he liked his wings. He liked them, but frankly that was the only thing he liked about himself. He slipped on his homemade wing jackets (since he couldn't afford the ones they sell in stores) and sat down on his bed, ready for school.
He opened his laptop and started to type a letter, a letter he had to write for his therapist. "Dear Evan Hansen, today is going to be an amazing day and here's why..."
On Evan's way to school, a girl approached him as she smiled very widely. It was almost too wide of a smile to be real.
"Hey. How was your summer?" she asked. Evan looked around, not sure if she's speaking to someone else.
"My...?" Evan says.
"Mine was productive. I did three internships and ninety hours of community service. I know: wow." the girl said. Evan didn't even know her name, but she wouldn't stop talking.
"Yeah. That's, wow." Evan replied awkwardly, as he noticed that this girl didn't wear wing jackets. Her wings were opened up and spread out. She has small wings, and the majority of the feathers were a deep purple with a few white feathers along the edges. Her wings were the linear type.
"Even though I was so busy, I still made some great friends. Or, well, acquaintances, more like," the girl said.
Evan gathered his courage up to ask her to sign his cast, but she suddenly interrupted him.
"Oh my God. What happened to your arm?"
Evan looked down at the cast on his arm, then said, "Oh. Well. I broke it. I was climbing a tree..."
"Oh really?" she said, with a very fake sounding shock. She didn't seem to be listening at all. "My grandma broke her hip getting into the bathtub in July. That was the beginning of the end, the doctors said. Because then she died."
Evan didn't know how to respond.
"Happy first day!" the strange girl said, walking off without ever signing his cast. What the.
Suddenly, Jared Kleinman approached Evan with the kind of practiced swagger only the deeply insecure can truly pull off. This was Evan's friend.
